Yardley Arts- Create a willow quirky bird with weave.

Back by popular demand!

A fun workshop making a 3D quirky bird with willow, supported on a metal frame.

You will use and learn basic weaving techniques that can then be used for trying something a little more challenging and creative in future. Jane will demonstrate each stage of the process and there will be time for questions and discussion about all things willow!

What to bring
An apron, gloves, sensible shoes and a sense of fun!

If you prefer to bring your own secateurs, please do so.

What is included
All materials including different types of willow, and secateurs / snips.

SMArT presents: Saturday Afternoon Life Drawing – longer poses with Faye

Model & Set
We are excited to welcome Faye for the whole day, with theme to be confirmed but this afternoon session will involve longer poses.

What’s involved
This untutored session is designed and run by SMArT — Sara Myers Art — offering a focused, spacious environment for people to simply be in the presence of a model. Whatever your practice, whether you enjoy experimental work or want the discipline and progression of regular life drawing, you are welcome.

Life drawing can be completely absorbing, occasionally frustrating and often calming and exhilarating all at the same time. We work with professional models and spot lighting in a large, day‑lit studio at Yardley Arts, with high windows and lots of space. Tea, coffee and biscuits are readily available, along with access to a kitchen and the pretty sculpture garden.

What’s provided
Easels, drawing boards, clips, basic A2 cartridge paper or sugar paper and a small selection of general materials are provided. You’re warmly encouraged to bring your own preferred papers and media - charcoal, graphite, ink, pastels - whatever helps you work freely, but everything essential is available. It’s also a good social space: a chance to meet like‑minded people who are experimenting, developing their skills or simply keeping their hand in with regular practice.

Yardley Arts- SMArT presents Saturday Morning Life Drawing

SMArT presents: Saturday Morning Life Drawing – untutored short‑pose set with Faye

Model & Set
This will be a classic short pose session - Theme tbc. It’s going from 5x1 minute poses slowly getting longer up to 30 minute poses. Short pose sessions are always fun and a great time to take risks, try new approaches and experiment.

Yardley Arts- Leaded Stained Glass Workshop

Spend a day at our stained glass workshop in a beautiful rural setting. Create a stained glass panel of approximately A4 size, using traditional tools and methods. Discover the art of traditional leaded stained glass, as used in cathedrals, churches and houses across the UK. Led by a qualified and experienced teacher, learn traditional techniques and craft your own glass panel to hang in a window or display in the garden.

Yardley Arts - Saturday ArtClub for Children
This experimental art class with Emma Lindsay will teach children new skills and how to use different materials in fun and varied ways.

A watercolour class to learn techniques including wet on wet, wet on dry and dry brush which we will then use to design imaginary and bold flower compositions.

What to bring
An apron/old shirt and a snack and drink if required.

What is included
All required drawing materials and equipment, water and biscuits.

Cost
£25 per child

Suitable for ages 7-12 years

Spaces limited to 12.

On the first (occasionally second) Friday of the month the main studio turns into a working space to paint, draw, or simply have time to work on some ideas.

Whether you’ve got plenty of projects to get on with or are in search of your creative mojo - and whatever your level - you’re welcome to join us in our mutually supportive atmosphere and make the most of our great facilities. The cost is just £10 for the day. (*Concessions available)

The studio will be open between 10am–4pm, so stay for a morning, an afternoon or all day!

There’s plenty of room to spread out and use tables and easels, as you wish. So come and make yourself at home in our beautiful studio, where you can join Polly, Sally or one of the other artists/volunteers who will be working on their own projects.

For those who’ve attended previous courses, this is a great opportunity to either practise what you’ve learned, finish something you’ve never had time for, or simply start something new. For those with a continual practice, you will be able to treat this as a working studio space for a day.

Yardley Arts has a very good selection of art books on artists and techniques as well as specialist art magazines providing great tips and inspiration. We have WiFi so if you want to bring iPads to reference an image, please do so.

Please note that these sessions are completely untutored.

The aim is to create a space in our lives to practise techniques and to experiment in a relaxed, sociable environment, and you never know, you might produce something wonderful.

Yardley Arts - Explorer Watercolour Techniques
6 wk morning course.

Unlock the beauty of watercolour painting with award-winning artist Samantha Brockway.

In this six-week course, Sam shares her passion for the medium, guiding you through simple yet effective techniques to help you paint with confidence. Whether you’re completely new to watercolours or have joined one of Sam’s previous courses, you’ll have the freedom to choose your own subject matter as your skills progress.

Throughout the course, you’ll explore a variety of paint effects and methods to build texture, manage mistakes, and select the right brushes for different outcomes. You’ll also gain an understanding of composition and colour theory, helping you plan and develop your own expressive paintings.

We will look at master artists’ work and the techniques they use, to help understand the planning of a painting and for inspiration..

This course will also cover the basics such as

paper stretching

creating washes

colour mixing

maintaining vibrancy with your colours

development of brush techniques and effects.

By the end of this course, you will have completed a minimum of 2 pieces of work. The first will be following a step-by-step process , thereafter working from a selection of images provided (multiple subject matter) or you can bring your own in to work from.

Yardley Arts - You Can Draw
6 wk evening course

On this seven week evening course, you will have the opportunity to build confidence in tackling both drawing, painting and pursue the development of your own ideas inspired by our theme.

This will be a skills based course, improving your drawing, meaningful markmaking and use of colour, whilst providing hints and tips on a personalised level, enabling you to progress at your own pace. This course does not offer step by step instruction to the group. The priority is to support personal creative development, resulting in wide ranging responses to the theme.

Our theme for this course is ‘Letters, Words, Numbers and Signs’, it will provide a prompt for your creative activities.

The theme offers opportunities for all styles of work from abstract through to highly representational and everything in between. There are no preconceptions regarding the outcomes you choose to make. You are entirely free to choose your own path of enquiry, and express yourself in ways which best suit your ideas and intentions.

There are several possible access routes into the project, for which more information will be supplied after booking. Approaches could be representational, conceptual, expressive or illustrative.

Looking at work by a range of artists will help to increase your awareness of the possible varied and personal response routes. The following will form part of our reference, and may help you to establish some initial thoughts.
