“I wouldn't know what to say if I were a listening volunteer with Samaritans”

Neither did I.

I thought Samaritans listeners had all the answers. That they were counsellors, experts, somehow better equipped than me.

But then I learned something surprising.

People who contact Samaritans aren't looking for perfect words.
They're not looking for solutions.
They're looking for someone who will truly listen.
Someone who won't judge.
Someone who won't tell them what to do.
Someone who will stay with them in their darkest moment and remind them they don't have to face it alone.

That someone could be you.

You don't need professional qualifications.
You don't need years of experience.
You don't need to know exactly what to say.

We'll give you the training, support and confidence you need.

What we can't teach is the thing you may already have:
Compassion.
Empathy.
The willingness to be there for another human being.

Every day, Samaritans volunteers help people feel heard, understood and less alone.

A conversation can change a life, even save a life.

And it starts with someone like you deciding to listen.
You don't need all the answers.
Just the willingness to listen.
Become a Samaritans listening volunteer.

A huge thank you to all the lovely people of Stokesley who braved the showers and kindly donated during our street collection last Saturday. We also had some great conversations too. Most of our funding to operate our branch in Northallerton comes from kind, local donations. You donated an amazing amount of over £250 for us. Thank you!

Fabulous evening last week with Thirsk Rotary Club at The Angel Inn, Topcliffe. Samaritans gave a talk about the Rural Initiative - how we support our rural communities and farming families, something both Samaritans and Thirsk Rotary are both passionate about.

Rural communities often face a unique combination of social, economic, and practical challenges that can have a significant impact on mental health. Samaritans Northallerton and the Dales play a vital role in supporting rural communities by addressing both emotional wellbeing and the barriers that often prevent people from seeking help.

By increasing awareness, reducing stigma and providing compassionate listening, we help rural communities feel less isolated and more able to seek help when needed.

Remember, you don't have to be in crisis to contact Samaritans. If something is troubling you, talking confidentially to someone who will listen without judgement can make a difference.

You can contact Samaritans for FREE 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year on 116 123.

If your organisation, charity, or business would like Samaritans to offer you a talk, please do get in touch with [email protected]
