Tuesday’s Top Tip - a long cane can help people with sight loss travel safely and independently by detecting obstacles, changes in surface levels, steps, kerbs and other hazards ahead.

As long canes are available in a range of lengths, a Vision Rehabilitation Specialist (VRS) will assess and recommend the most suitable option for each individual. Contact Northumberland Sensory Services - BID Services for more information.

Many people with hearing loss use lip-reading and facial expressions to help them understand what’s being said. Keeping your face visible can make communication much easier.

A small change can make a big difference. 💙

💻 TECH VOLUNTEERS WANTED! 👓📱

Could your tech skills make a difference to someone living with sensory loss?
Vision Northumberland is looking for friendly and patient Tech Volunteers to help people across Northumberland feel more confident using digital devices and accessible technology.

You don’t need to be a tech expert - if you enjoy technology, like helping people and are willing to learn, we’d love to hear from you!

As a Tech Volunteer, you could help someone to:
📱 Download and use helpful apps
💬 Show them how to send messages or use email
🌐 Help to access the internet, online shopping and everyday services
👨‍👩‍👧 Connect an Alexa and demonstrate the features.
♿ Enable accessibility features, magnification and voice assistants
🦻 Connect hearing aids to digital devices

Flexible time commitment - Volunteer expenses reimbursed - Training and support provided - Aged 18+ - Enhanced DBS check required

📞 Is your landline going digital?

The UK’s old analogue telephone network is being replaced by a digital phone service. The change is happening gradually, with the old network due to be switched off by January 2027.

For people living with sight loss, changes to technology can sometimes feel daunting but you don’t have to manage it alone. 💙

If you’re unsure what the digital switchover means for you, or need help using new technology:

👩‍💻 RNIB’s Technology for Life team can provide advice and support with accessible technology.

📞 You can contact the RNIB Helpline on 0303 123 9999, Monday to Friday, 9am – 6pm.

🏠 If you receive support from your telephone provider, let them know if you have additional needs or rely on your landline for an important service. Providers have additional support available for customers who may need it.

Don’t ignore a letter or phone call from your provider about the switchover. If you’re unsure, ask for help. ❤️
