Northorpe Hall Child & Family Trust

Northorpe Hall Child & Family Trust Wellbeing support for children, young people & families, helping them thrive, have a voice, and reach their potential. Now more than ever.

Northorpe Hall Child & Family Trust is a West Yorkshire based charity, supporting over 5500 children and young people each year, who are experiencing difficulty or disadvantage due to mental health challenges. We believe that all children and young people have the right to good mental health most of the time and provide the best support to help them recover quickly when they don’t. This extends to

parents, carers and siblings too. We provide a safe space for children and young people to explore better ways to manage their mental health and flourish. We nurture emotional resilience and wellbeing through respect, kindness and understanding. We use our knowledge and experience to advocate for the mental health of children and young people. We work with our service users and partners to innovate and improve what we do and how we do it. We believe that children and young people deserve more.

Something very exciting happened for us yesterday: One of our incredible young mentees spoke to local media about her experience of exams, and how support from Northorpe has helped her get through them.

We'll share more once the feature airs, but before that we wanted to say a huge thank you to Mary, her mum and her siblings for welcoming us into their home and helping to tell the story of how mentoring can make a difference in a young person's life.

We are so proud of Mary. 😍

Even with exams already demanding so much of her energy and focus, Mary spoke with honesty, courage and maturity about her journey and the impact mentoring has had on her life.

A special thank you also goes to Lydia, whose support as a mentor has helped Mary navigate some of the challenges that young people face during exam season.

Having Lydia there yesterday meant so much and was a wonderful reminder of the trusting relationship they have built together.

We can't wait for the local community to hear Mary's story when the feature is released, and we'll be sure to share it here once it airs.

For now, we simply want to say thank you and a huge well done to Mary.💙

And also to reshare the fabulous blog she helped us write, to give other young people some inspiration and encouragement this exam season: https://www.northorpe.com/post/exam-stress-support-our-young-mentee-shares-their-tips

As we celebrate Volunteers' Week, we want to take a moment to recognise the incredible people who help make our work possible. 💙

Behind every young person we support is a team of individuals, volunteers and organisations who generously give their time, skills and expertise to help transform young lives across Kirklees.

From the people who enable us to deliver our CREATE programme, to Nurture Landscapes who help maintain our gorgeous outdoor spaces, and Operam Education who will be refreshing some of our indoor spaces this summer...

All these contributions help create a place where young people can feel safe, supported and able to thrive — a place that gets them!

Then of course there are our volunteer mentors, who provide one-to-one support, week in and week out, for young people facing challenges, struggling with confidence, experiencing anxiety, or simply needing someone in their corner.

During Volunteers' Week, we're saying a huge thank you to everyone who supports the work we do and inviting even more of you to join us.

If you'd like to dedicate some of your own time to supporting young people in our community, we'd love to meet you at our upcoming Volunteer Celebration Event on Wednesday 24th June.

You'll hear more about what volunteer mentoring involves, listen to stories of impact, and discover how you could make a difference in a young person's life.

There’s something powerful about what happens when a young person is given time, care and a person they can depend on...

When 'E' joined our mentoring programme, they struggled with severe anxiety and very low confidence.

They rarely left the house and felt overwhelmed by everyday spaces like shops or cafés.

Support started small: Short drives, a drink from a drive-through, just building safety and trust.

From there, we gradually worked towards short visits into the community and, over time, those small steps turned into real change.

'E' began attending shops and cafés, then started working towards learning to drive... something they described as a symbol of their independence and control.

Most importantly, their confidence shifted from survival to possibility, they told us:

"I can go places myself now. I can make phone calls, drive and go to doctor appointments. In a lot of ways, I'm more independent."

This is what mentoring looks like in practice: steady, support that helps young people rebuild trust in themselves, others, and their future.

And YOU can be a part of this incredible transformation!

Over the past year, 71% of the young people supported through our mentoring programme said they felt more confident and hopeful about their future 💙

Sometimes all it takes is one trusted person to listen, encourage and remind a young person they’re not facing things alone.

Mentoring helps young people:
✨ Build confidence
✨ Feel more positive about the future
✨ Improve emotional wellbeing
✨ Cope better with everyday challenges

And honestly, the smallest steps can become the biggest wins 🌟

We’re so proud to be part of these journeys.

Want to find out how you could support young people through volunteering? Come along to our Volunteer Event on Wednesday 24th June ✨

This is what happens when a community comes together for a young person 💙

Back in March, we shared a request from one of our mentees who wanted to explore crochet as a way to support their emotional wellbeing...

Thanks to the kindness of strangers, a wonderful beginner-friendly kit was donated by Vicky 🧶✨

The kit included wool, hooks, a beginner guide, and some thoughtful wellbeing treats — meaning Mentee 'A' was able to get started on their new hobby straight away!

Now, we’ve now had the loveliest update from her mentor Lydia:

"'A' has not only been learning crochet, she’s now confidently teaching me how to do it, so I can go on and share the skill with another young person 🫶✨"

From a simple request, to a full circle of learning, sharing, and giving back… this is mentoring in action at Northorpe Hall!

Thank you again to everyone who has been part of this journey so far. Your kindness is helping young people feel supported, capable, and connected.

This week, we celebrated another wonderful group completing Riding the Rapids at Northorpe Hall. 💙

It's our 10-week wellbeing course for parents and carers of children and young people who are autistic, on the pathway to assessment, or have a learning disability.

The programme exists to help families in our community feel more supported, more confident, and less alone — and the feedback from this group has been incredibly moving...

Parents told us the programme gave them:

✨ “A toolkit that will help me and my family not just now, but for years to come.”
✨ “Useful strategies that actually work.”
✨ A safe space where they “felt comfortable and able to complete the course” after struggling in other settings.

One parent even said:

💬 “All parents and professionals with neurodivergent individuals could benefit from this course.”

And another said:
💬 “The biggest thank you and praise for Rachel & Rosa for their kindness and patience throughout. They have made an incredible difference to every one of us.”

We know parenting can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when families are navigating additional needs and long waiting lists...

That’s why programmes like Riding the Rapids matter so much — creating spaces where people feel heard, understood, and supported.

A huge well done to everyone who took part 💙
