The Christophers (Cert 15)
Dir Steven Soderbergh UK/USA 2026 100 mins

Starring Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel in a brilliant double act, The Christophers is about an elderly and eccentric artist Julian Sklar – in a pitch-perfect performance by McKellen – whose children hire young artist Lori Butler, played by Coel, to pose as his assistant and complete a series of Sklar’s unfinished paintings so that they can make a fortune selling them after his death.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Ed Solomon, the film is a thoroughly entertaining and richly detailed study of character and the creative process. James Corden and Jessica Gunning also star as Sklar’s unscrupulous children.

Father Mother Sister Brother (Cert 15)

Dir Jim Jarmusch US/UK/Italy/France/Ireland/Germany 2025 110 mins

The latest film from Jim Jarmusch Father Mother Sister Brother won the Golden Lion at last year’s Venice Film Festival and stars Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver in an absorbing and acutely observed portrait of three families.

This ‘small treasure of a film’ is one to savour for its warmth and humour as it explores family dynamics and asks why those who are closest to us are also the most unknowable.

The Regal Film Society AGM will be held in the Regal bar before the film at 6.15pm. Please come and support your film society.

The Stranger (Cert 15)

Dir François Ozon France 2025 122 mins

Versatile French director François Ozon’s adaptation of Albert Camus’s existential 1942 novella L’Étranger is beautifully shot in crystalline monochrome, creating a powerful sense of period and place.

Set in 1940s Algiers where the French colonists and indigenous Arab population live uneasily side by side, the film follows the unreadable Meursault whose apparently random act of violence reflects the underlying reality and injustice of the colonial system. Sensual and sumptuous, the film pulsates with mystery and tension.

EUGENE ONEGIN
Tuesday 5th May 2026, 6:00pm

Following her acclaimed 2024 company debut in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, soprano Asmik Grigorian returns to the Met as Tatiana, the lovestruck young heroine in this ardent operatic adaptation of Pushkin.

Baritone Igor Golovatenko reprises his portrayal of the urbane Onegin, who realizes his affection for her all too late. The Met’s evocative production, directed by Tony Award–winner Deborah Warner, 'offers a beautifully detailed reading of … Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance' (The Telegraph).

The running time time: 245 minutes, including two Intervals and the opera is sung in Russian with English subtitles.

THE MAGIC FLUTE
[Filmed live in October 2025]

Princess Pamina has been captured. Her mother, the Queen of the Night, tasks the young Prince Tamino with her daughter’s rescue. But when Tamino and his friendly sidekick, Papageno, embark on their adventure, they soon learn that when it comes to the quest for love, nothing is as it really seems. Guided by a magic flute, they encounter monsters, villains, and a mysterious brotherhood of men – but help, it turns out, comes when you least expect it.

Mozart’s fantastical opera glitters in David McVicar’s enchanting production. The Royal Opera LIVE from The Royal Opera House
SIEGFRIED (Cert 12A)

Tuesday 31st March, 5.15pm

Raised by a scheming dwarf and unaware of his true family origins, a young man embarks on an epic journey. Soon, destiny brings him face-to-face with a shattered sword, a fearsome dragon and the cursed ring it guards, and a Valkyrie forced into enchanted slumber ...

Moments of transcendent beauty and heroic triumph sparkle in the third chapter of Wagner’s Ring cycle, brought to life under Barrie Kosky’s inspired eye following his spectacular Das Rheingold (2023) and Die Walküre (2025).

Andreas Schager, in his much-anticipated debut with The Royal Opera, stars as Siegfried’s titular hero, alongside Christopher Maltman’s towering Wanderer, Peter Hoare’s treacherous Mime and Elisabet Strid’s radiant Brünnhilde. Antonio Pappano conducts, drawing out the unspoken tensions and ethereal mysticism of Wagner’s dynamic score.
The opera is sung in German with English subtitles and the running time is 330 minutes.
