📍 LOCAL UPDATE: A THIRD LOCAL GP SURGERY

For many years now, we’ve written a local update every month in the Mickleover Directory booklet, delivered to every household.

With November’s edition now dropping through letterboxes, we thought we’d share some of the updates featured in it, giving you a flavour of the local issues we cover in the booklet throughout the year.

👉 First up: an update on the long-promised third GP surgery for Mickleover.

" We always want to keep residents fully informed about progress on the long-promised third GP surgery for Mickleover. A new surgery was promised years ago to support our growing community as major housing developments were approved and built across the area, with New House Farm (directly to the west of Ladybank Road) identified as the location for the facility. Yet, despite thousands of new homes being delivered, residents are still waiting for the healthcare infrastructure that was meant to accompany that growth.

We remain in regular contact with the Derbyshire Integrated Care Board (ICB), which is responsible for delivering the new surgery. Unfortunately, the updates we have received over the past year have done little to reassure us that sufficient progress is being made. We feel, all things considered, progress has been far too slow, and we share residents’ frustration at the continued delays.

In any case, the latest update, received at the end of September, confirmed that the ICB needs to prepare a revised financial proposal following changes to ‘valuations and associated costs’. This creates further uncertainty and risks pushing back the delivery of a surgery that our community urgently needs.

However, the ICB has told us that it 'remains committed to the scheme and hopes to complete the revised proposal by the end of this year. Once this work is completed, the next steps can include progressing the planning application and tendering contracts to operate the surgery'.

As your local councillors, we will continue to press the ICB for progress and clear timescales. It is simply unacceptable that, while thousands of new homes have been built since this surgery was first promised, the healthcare provision needed to support those residents has still not materialised. With thousands more homes planned, including major developments such as Staker Lane, the need for additional GP capacity becomes more urgent with every passing year - likely in addition to what we are waiting for.

We will continue fighting for the healthcare infrastructure Mickleover was promised and will keep residents updated as soon as further information becomes available. "

Mickleover Remembers - poppies have been put up through Mickleover Village and at Devonshire Drive / Silverhill shops.

The Tommy display is also in place at The Village Parade. Paul Cocker from Nun Street Plating kindly manufactured and donated this to the community last year.

A big thank you to Our Mickleover volunteers for braving the weather and helping in the village yesterday.

On Sunday, November 8th, the Mickleover Remembrance Service and wreath-laying ceremony, led by Rev Canon Peter Walley will begin at 10:45am at the War Memorial, All Saints Church and The Square, Etwall Road.

We’ve been out this morning with Our Mickleover making a start on the parade Christmas lights.

It might seem a little early to be thinking about Christmas, but there’s a huge amount of preparation that goes into bringing the annual Christmas Festival to life!

✅ Unanimous support for our motion at last night’s Full Council.

You may remember that we promised to raise the issue of telegraph poles and mobile masts being installed close to residents’ homes, often with little meaningful opportunity for local people to influence or object to what is proposed.

Last night, we brought a motion to Full Council calling on the Government to review and tighten the permitted development rights (PD) governing telecoms infrastructure. We shared our experience of supporting residents in Mickleover and how BT Openreach, especially, are exploiting (in our view) the PD process.

The motion received unanimous support from the whole Council.

The rules were relaxed to help speed up the rollout of broadband and improve mobile coverage - objectives we support. But we also believe that residents should have a meaningful say when infrastructure is proposed immediately outside their homes.

We’ve been supporting local residents who have raised concerns about this for some time, and it was good to see the whole Council agree that the current balance needs to be looked at.

◾ The Council will now write to the Government Minister, sending a clear cross-party message from Derby:
