🦊 A fox on the hunt... or having a bit of fun? 🐭

These still images, captured by our NHMP survey cameras in Otford this year, show a fox with a mouse in a fascinating glimpse of natural behaviour that's usually hidden from view.

We're delighted to announce that our Thames and Medway Canal Nocturnal Wildlife Walk has been rescheduled and bookings are now open.

We've loved sharing some of our favourite images from the recent survey in Otford, but these highlights are just a tiny fraction of what our cameras recorded.

🐦📸 Not just mammals!

While the survey focuses on mammals, our cameras also captured some fantastic birds along the way.

From curious crows and strutting pheasants to unexpected feathered guests dropping in, these images offer a wonderful glimpse into the wildlife using the same habitats as our local mammals.

We're still working our way through around 240,000 images, and every photo needs to be classified before it can contribute to wildlife research.

It's safe to say that squirrels have provided some of the funniest moments from our recent survey in Otford.

From dramatic leaps and perfect poses to close-up camera inspections, they've clearly enjoyed being in front of the lens!

Can you help our partners create an eel swarm?

Medway Swale Estuary Partnership (Group) are looking for volunteers to crochet eels to support education activites!

Calling all the crafty folks out there! 🧶

One of our fabulous projects is called ‘Wild Estuary’ run by the lovely Belinda from the Medway Swale Estuary Partnership, and she has come to us with a special request. 💁‍♀️

She is looking to put together a swarm of crochet eels to be used in creative games and enhance the learning experience for the school children that will be participating in ‘Wild Estuary’ next term. 🌊

We have a pattern to follow, and we have attached a couple of images to give you an idea of what we are looking for.

I can already hear you asking….Why eels❓

Well, the European eel is critically endangered with a population decline of around 90-95% over the last 40 years. ☠️
🔬MSEP carried out some eel e-DNA (Environmental DNA) surveys on the Hoo Peninsula last year as part of another piece of work and are now looking at how to improve eel movement across the marshes so that they can return home to the Sargasso Sea to spawn. 🌊

Using them in the education programme for schools helps raise awareness and breaks down the barriers of misunderstanding eels and their importance locally for biodiversity.

So, can you crochet an eel to add to the swarm❓🧶

🌞 Help wildlife beat the heat! During prolonged hot and dry spells, water becomes one of the most important resources for wildlife. By simply putting out a shallow bowl of fresh water, you can support birds, mammals and insects when they need it most. Every drop can make a difference. 🐦🦔🐝💧
