Mayfield Festival

Mayfield Festival Mayfield Festival of Music and the Arts 2026 will take place from 26 April 2026 to 10 May 2026. Dunstan’s and St Leonards-Mayfield School.

The Mayfield Festival was founded in the 1970 by Canon Donald Carter, Vicar of St Dunstan’s, Mayfield’s Parish Church, and Kenneth Pont then Director of Music at St. Its original intention was to raise funds for a new village hall. That never happened; but the vision and scope of the festival gradually expanded and the Festival soon became recognised as one the highlights in the cultural/musical calendar of the South East.

TONIGHT!! Thursday 30 April 2026, 7.30pm: THE OLD MAID & THE THIEF
*St. Dunstan's Church, High Street, Mayfield, East Sussex
*£17.50, £7.50, £5 (25 and under: £5 any seat)

Gian Carlo Menotti's sparkling one-act radio opera The Old Maid and The Thief forms the centrepiece of an evening of American music curated by musicians of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Written as the first opera specifically for radio in 1939, this witty tale of small-town intrigue, gossip and deception is paired with Barber's radiant Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Gershwin's Three Preludes for Piano and more to complete an evening of transatlantic mid-century elegance and charm.

The conductor for this performance, Tom Hawkey-Soar, is a musician with deep roots in Mayfield. He began his musical life aged seven as a chorister at St Dunstan's Church and was a long-time member of the Mayfield Band.

This concert is kindly sponsored by Tester & Jones of Crowborough.

Tickets on the door.

The Mayfield Festival Choir with The Mayfield Baroque Orchestra, delivered an outstanding opening concert of Handel's Israel in Egypt last night, setting the tone for what promises to be an excellent two weeks ahead.

Many thanks to the wonderful soloists, Aneska Diament, Natalka Pasicznyk, Alexandria Moon, Francis Melville, Gabriel Tufail-Smith and Ed Birchinall. To the orchestra, brilliantly led by George Clifford and of course to Jeremy Summerly.

You can hear the Mayfield Festival Choir again in the closing concert on Sunday 10th May where they will be singing Hubert Parry's Blest Pair of Sirens. www.mayfieldfestival.co.uk
