Chatty Café Mercado Lounge Celebrates Its First Birthday

Chatty Café Mercado Lounge is looking forward to celebrating its first birthday on Wednesday, 24 June 2026.

The Chatty Table meets every Wednesday from 10.00am to 12 noon, and everyone is welcome to join.

Chatty Café started in the UK in 2019, founded by Alex Hoskyn. There are now Chatty Cafés across the UK and beyond.

The reason for its success is that it is a very simple concept. Pubs, cafés and community centres sign up to the scheme and agree to allocate a table once a week for an hour or so as a Chatty Table. The tables are hosted by one or more volunteers, who are recruited and supported by the Chatty Café head office.

There are four volunteers who host the Chatty Table at Mercado Lounge, ensuring that there is always at least one volunteer there each week.

Another key strength of the scheme is its consistency. It takes place every single week, rain or shine. It has even run on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The people who attend come from all walks of life and backgrounds, but they share a common desire for social interaction without the hassle of arranging to meet a friend, relative or colleague. It's simply a case of, "It's Wednesday and I fancy some company."

The Chatty Table regularly attracts around 15 people. Some are regular attendees, while others pop in from time to time. There is no registration, no charge, and attendees can share as much or as little as they feel comfortable with.

We have received amazing feedback from people who have told us how much the Chatty Table has brightened their week by giving them something to look forward to.

Chatty Café will be running as usual on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, with a little celebration and, hopefully, some cake too!

Chatty Cafe Mercado Lounge, tomorrow from 10am to 12noon. Come along and join us. Everyone welcome.
We will be celebrating 1 year of Chatty Cafe on the 24th June.
We have welcomed so many people to the chatty table and hopefully brightened their day.

As it is Volunteers Week, why not consider volunteering to help host the Chatty Cafe at Mercado Lounge, Wednesday mornings from 10am to 12 noon.

You will be joining three other volunteers, Amanda, Helen and Maureen….

Your commitment is very flexible, every week, once a fortnight , once every three weeks or once a month. It really is a very relaxed and fulfilling way to give a bit back.

The role is suited to someone who is chatty and welcoming and ready to listen.

Chatty Cafe tomorrow from 10am to 12noon, looking forward to welcoming everyone. If it’s your first time, just head in the door and look for the yellow signs on the tables. We are usually the long table in the middle. One of our volunteers will be there to welcome you.
