⚓ What a Way to Spend a Friday Evening ⚓

While many people were winding down for the weekend, our cadets were making the most of a fantastic evening afloat at Sea Cadets Thrapston Boat Station .

With a steady breeze across the water, conditions were perfect for sailing, while other cadets enjoyed kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), powerboating and rowing, all while developing their skills, teamwork and confidence.

These evenings are exactly what Sea Cadets is all about – getting outdoors, learning new skills, challenging yourself and having fun with friends.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers and instructors who make opportunities like this possible.

📢 Interested in joining the adventure? We are always looking for new cadets aged 12+ and adult volunteers.

⚠️ National Drowning Prevention Week ⚠️

Today marks the start of National Drowning Prevention Week and, with warmer weather finally arriving, more people will be heading to rivers, lakes, reservoirs and the coast to enjoy the outdoors.

At Sea Cadets, we spend a great deal of time on the water, but we do so safely. Our cadets wear buoyancy aids, activities are led by qualified instructors, staff are first aid trained, radios are carried, and we carefully assess the conditions and waterways we use.

The reason we take these precautions is simple: water can be unpredictable. It can be much colder than it looks, conditions can change quickly, and even strong swimmers can get into difficulty.

Remember:
🌊 Respect the water – it can be deceiving
👥 Never enter the water alone
📱 Let someone know where you are going
🛟 If you get into trouble, float on your back and call for help
📞 If you see someone else in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the appropriate emergency service

A few moments of awareness and good decision-making can save lives.

Enjoy the warm weather, stay safe, and look after one another.

A memorable evening on the water for TS Fernie

Friday’s boating night was one to remember, with over 30 cadets and volunteers taking to the water as part of our regular weekly training programme.

We were delighted to welcome Captain Hannah Mackenzie RN, Captain of the Sea Cadets on her first visit to an Eastern Area unit. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the dedication, enthusiasm and professionalism of our cadets and volunteers.

During the visit, Captain Mackenzie spent time meeting cadets and staff, learning more about the unit, touring our boat station and joining us afloat to experience first-hand the range of boating activities that take place each week.

The evening concluded with a particularly proud moment for the unit as we were formally presented with our second consecutive Captain’s Commendation and our 2025 Burgee, recognition of the hard work, commitment and achievements of everyone involved.

A huge thank you to Captain Mackenzie for taking the time to visit us and see the incredible work being delivered on the water. We look forward to building on this success and continuing to provide outstanding opportunities for our young people.

🫡 June’s 1s Night ⚓️

Tuesday saw the ships company come together for our monthly 1s night. The evening started with our monthly ceremonial colours routine and divisional inspections.

This monthly ships company activity was learning about the concept of crossing the line. The cadets had a great night learning about the ceremony, why the naval does it and taking part in their own version.

This month also saw LC Nathan lead the ships company for the final time before he ages out and embarks on his next adventure. During LC Nathan’s time in cadets he has achieved a vast range of cadet and instructor qualifications, has supported getting a number of cadets from units across the district afloat whilst continuing to be a core role model for all cadets within the TS Fernie family. LC Nathan was presented with a collage of photographs showcasing his cadet journey through two different units across his time. We wish LC Nathan well and look forward to seeing him back with TS Fernie soon.

As with all 1s nights we held our monthly awards celebrating the incredible achievements of our cadets.

⚓ Why We Volunteer ⚓

"Seeing a young person achieve something they never thought possible makes every hour worthwhile."

Volunteering with Sea Cadets isn't just about teaching skills. It's about helping young people grow in confidence, resilience and self-belief.

This Volunteers' Week we're proud to recognise the amazing people who make that happen.

If you've ever considered volunteering, we'd love to hear from you.

⚓ Creating Opportunities ⚓
Over the past year our cadets have enjoyed sailing, rowing, paddlesports, offshore voyages, STEM weekends, fieldcraft training, marine engineering, first aid courses, community events, parades and much more.

None of this would be possible without volunteers.

Every qualification gained, every challenge overcome and every achievement celebrated begins with someone willing to give their time to support young people.

Thank you to every volunteer who helps create these opportunities.
