New devastating figures from the Museum of Homelessness and the National Child Mortality Database reveal that 1720 people experiencing homelessness died in the UK in 2025. This includes 51 children, the highest number ever reported through the Dying Homeless Project.
Only 7 of those children were known through local authority homelessness reporting routes, which raises serious concerns about how local authorities departments are working together to safeguard homeless children.
63% of the children who died were under one year old.
We support the research's recommendation that local authority housing departments should be required to record all child deaths occurring in temporary accommodation and publish learning on how future deaths can be prevented.
