Yesterday, June 1st, was Madaraka Day, Self-Governance Day, in Kenya. This marks the day in 1963 that Kenya achieved internal self-rule after being a British colony since 1920.

The Etatu team celebrated the day by joining up with Clean Green, a local environmental group, and planting trees at Milalani Special Needs Unit. We are involved with the school and we were delighted to commemorate the day with them in this way.

Last Sunday was the last MOP meeting before Ramadan. We were fortunate to have lots of visitors, including the AV gap year students, who played games with the children and left some wonderful clothes.
We wish everyone a happy Ramadan.

Happy International Women’s Day!
We love celebrating here at Etatu, and today marks a great opportunity to celebrate two amazing women - Rehema and Mebakare. The girls were two of the first children Etatu sponsored at secondary school in 2014. Last year saw them both graduating University - Mebakare (picture 2) in the medical profession and Rehema (picture 3) as a teacher. These women provide a great example of what Etatu strives to do: raise the aspiration and self-belief of children from disadvantaged families and help them to achieve a high standard. What an inspiration to us all!

Last week Jacquie met the Etatu team to discuss upcoming events and activities. This allowed the team to link the various elements of Etatu’s work to set a clear timetable with goals for the year. It was a long exercise so the workshop took place at “Hidden Paradise”, the team’s favourite local spot for a treat!

Last year marked 10 years of work for Etatu in Msambewni, which would not be possible without our hard working and committed team, who celebrated the anniversary by taking the train to Voi at Tsavo National Park for a safari trip.

Without Etatu’s help students at Msambweni Primary School would be doing a long day of KPSEA exams with nothing to eat after their 6am breakfast.

£400 can feed 100 children for 3 days: a filling lunch of rice, beans, veg and a banana.

We would like to wish Eid Mubarak to everyone we work with in Msambweni and others celebrating around the world today! Over the last few days, we have distributed food parcels to all the children who attend MOP as well as to several economically vulnerable families in the village.

For three years now Etatu has been supporting the Special Needs Unit of Milalani Primary School. The unit has 35 pupils with diverse educations needs and one fantastic teacher in Madam Rehema, who works tirelessly alongside two members of support staff. They provide nurture and engagement to those who would otherwise fall through the cracks of the system or be excluded from school all together.
We were incredibly lucky to have three experienced SEN specialists, Claire, Sasha and Sarah travel out to Msambweni this month, specifically to support this unit. Their friend, Lorenza, a journalist, also visited and has written about their visit. Their work at the school with the children, with parents and with Md. Rehema was immensely helpful. They have raised over £4000 which will go a long way to support our long term initiatives at the school. We are all very grateful.
