In April, The Mitchell Library Death Cafe covered a range of topics with a few tears and laughter along the way. Near death experience, getting through the days following the loss of a loved one, spiritualism and the comfort of connecting after death, fear of death that comes with being a parent. Questions: is there an after life? what does a good death look like for you? That's just a brief and edited summary.

There are still places for the May Cafe this Thursday 28 May. What would you like to talk about?

Full details are in the bio.

The Mitchell Library Death Cafes are hosted by Creating Conversations in partnership with Glasgow Libraries

After loss, even the smallest next step can feel frightening.

One of our volunteers, Amie, has written a deeply personal piece about grief, fear, creativity, and learning how to move forward after the deaths of two of her siblings. From returning to music after bereavement to reflecting on people like Tim Curry, Lisa Faulkner and Kim Deal, this article explores what it really means to keep going when life has changed completely.

There’s no perfect answer or magic fix — just the courage to take the next step, however small it may be.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers Lucy, Mini, Ash and Hardeep for hosting this month's Walthamstow Grief Cafe and for creating a welcoming space for both familiar faces and many new people joining us for the first time.

Thank you also to everyone who came along. Supporting one another reminds us that no one has to navigate grief alone, and there is comfort in community and connection.

If you would like to join us next time, our next Walthamstow Grief Café is on Saturday 20th June.

You can book your place now here: https://creatingconversations.uk/events/

With thanks to for making their lovely cafe available to us, and the National Lottery Community Fund for supporting our Grief Cafés.

Grief can feel overwhelming, especially when sensory needs and neurodiversity are part of the experience.

Join us for a FREE talk on Neurodiversity & Grief hosted by Creating Conversations CIC and Ouroboros Therapy.

Together, we’ll create a gentle, supportive space to explore the intersection of grief and the neurodivergent experience.

The evening includes:
• A 20-minute talk by Chiara Virgilio from Ouroboros Therapy
• Practical tools for navigating overwhelm, executive function, and emotional processing
• Small-group facilitated sharing spaces
• Freedom to participate as much or as little as feels right for you.

There is absolutely no pressure to speak; you are welcome to simply listen and be present.

This event has been made possible through funding from MuchLoved, the UK’s leading in-memory platform.

Here is the date of our next Death Café in Walthamstow.

We love welcoming new people, so do come along if you would like to try something new.

Our Death Café is a space for our community (usually a bunch of strangers) to come together to talk openly and honestly about life and death over refreshments. It’s an open space to explore personal thoughts and feelings about death, ultimately helping people to live fuller lives.

It’s a discussion group, rather than grief support.

People sometimes worry that it might be morbid or depressing but not at all. Usually people leave feeling quite uplifted and we usually have a laugh too!

Do come and join us.

Have you ever wondered what people actually talk about at a Death Café?

Last week’s Leytonstone Death Café gave a wonderful glimpse into just how wide-ranging, thoughtful and surprising those conversations can be.

Thank you to our brilliant volunteers, Jon and Katy, for hosting this month’s gathering. It was our biggest gathering so far, which is fantastic given that it took place during Dying Matters Awareness Week.

Over an hour and a half, the conversation moved in so many fascinating directions. It’s always amazing to see where these discussions lead when people are given the space to talk openly.

Some of the themes explored included:
• “SADmin” — the admin involved in preparing for death and dealing with everything afterwards
• Different cultural perspectives on death and how attitudes can vary around the world
• Reincarnation and beliefs about what happens after death
• Whether death can sometimes be understood as both a good thing and a painful thing
• How being close to death can shift our perspective on life, helping us rebalance
• Priorities and find new meaning and purpose
• How people within the same family can grieve and experience loss very differently
• The death penalty and reflections on justice, punishment, and wrongful convictions
• Whether we would want to know how or when we will die if given the choice
• Saying goodbye and the emotions and questions that come with it.

Thank you to everyone who came along, listened, shared, reflected, and helped create such a warm, thoughtful and compassionate space.

If you would like to join us next time, our next Death Café is in Walthamstow on Sat 6th June.
