Leytonstone Death Cafe

Talking about death helps us live well.

Death Cafe is a global movement bringing people together to talk openly and honestly about death, dying, and what gives life meaning.

Our next Leytonstone Death Cafe is a chance to pause, meet others, share thoughts, ask questions, listen, or simply be curious. There’s no agenda, no
pressure to speak, and no need to have any particular experience or perspective.

Come along for a hot drink and an open conversation about one of the things we all have in common: being mortal.

Everyone is welcome. Please share with anyone who might be interested.

We’re delighted to share the findings from the recent evaluation of our Grief Walks at Walthamstow Wetlands, now brought together in this new infographic.

The findings show that these walks offer so much more than time outdoors.

Walking alongside others who understand grief can help to:
✨ Reduce feelings of isolation
✨ Support mental and social wellbeing
✨ Create meaningful connections
✨ Provide a safe space to share experiences and feel understood

Sometimes, a simple walk can make a real difference.

A huge thank you to Iona Scott, Trainee Clinical Psychologist, for conducting the evaluation and helping us better understand the impact of our Grief Walks. These insights will help us to develop the walks and strengthen the support we offer to people who are grieving.

And thank you to everyone who took part in the evaluation and shared their experiences so openly.

Finally, we’re incredibly grateful to The National Lottery Community Fund, whose funding made these Grief Walks possible.

Grief can feel overwhelming and isolating. For LGBTQ+ people, it can also bring unique experiences that aren't always recognised or understood.

Join us for an evening of learning, reflection and connection as we explore LGBTQ+ experiences of grief in a welcoming and supportive space.

Whether you're part of the LGBTQ+ community, a friend, family member or ally wanting to better understand these experiences, you're welcome.

🗓️ Wednesday 23 September 2026
🕡 6.30–8.15 pm
📍 The Mill, 7–11 Coppermill Lane, E17 7HA

The evening will include:
• A 20-minute talk from Sarah Humphreys (elop)
• Facilitated small-group reflection and discussion
• A dedicated LGBTQ+ only discussion group available during the small-group session.

This event has been made possible thanks to funding from MuchLoved - the UK’s leading in-memory platform, helping people remember someone special and fundraise in their memory.

We'd love to see you there.

"You will feel welcomed, reassured, held... and you will feel better for it afterwards."

When you're grieving, taking that first step can feel overwhelming.

In our last Grief Cafe film in this series, Myriam shares how, despite feeling apprehensive about walking into a room full of strangers, she found warmth, understanding and connection.

Grief can often feel isolating, but you don't have to carry it alone.

Whether your loss is recent or happened some time ago, our Grief Cafes provide a safe, welcoming space to share your experiences, listen to others, and simply be with people who understand.

We're incredibly grateful to Myriam for sharing her experience with such honesty and openness.

"Whatever your pain, you will feel connected. We are all on the same journey."

Do come and join us at our next Grief Cafes.

Our next Walthamstow and Wanstead Grief Cafes are in August – Sat 15th and Thurs 20th.

"I think for me the loneliness was quite a big thing and if somebody feels that as well I would recommend coming to the grief cafe.”

For Ilona, one of the hardest parts of grief was the loneliness.

In our latest Grief Café film, Ilona shares how finding a space where she could talk openly about the person she lost, without judgement or pressure, helped her feel supported and less alone.

Whether your loss is recent or happened years ago, grief doesn't have a timeline. If you're feeling isolated, nervous about reaching out, or simply looking for people who understand, our Grief Cafes offer a warm and welcoming space to connect.

Thank you to Ilona for sharing her story so openly and honestly. We hope it offers comfort and encouragement to anyone wondering if a Grief Café might be for them.

Our next Walthamstow and Wanstead Grief Cafes are in August – Sat 15th and Thurs 20th. Find out more using the link in our bio.

At our Walthamstow Grief Cafe this weekend, we spent time together sharing some of the many different ways grief has been showing up in our lives, and what we were particularly finding hard right now.

We talked about the impact of feeling let down by NHS services, both physical and mental health, and how having to navigate those experiences can add another layer to an already difficult time.

We reflected on how easy it can be to push grief away because it feels too painful, too overwhelming, or simply because life is busy and we have to keep going. We also spoke about the importance of finding moments, when we can stay with our sadness rather than trying to move away from it.

We explored the grief that comes not only from the death of someone we love, but from the loss of the future we had imagined with them—the plans, the hopes, the ordinary moments we thought we would have together.

One theme kept returning throughout our conversation: the importance of community and connection. Grief can feel incredibly lonely, and yet there is something so comforting about being with people who understand, who aren’t trying to fix it - who we can simply share our story with.

We also reminded each other to be gentle with ourselves. Grief can be exhausting, and sometimes the bravest thing we can do is take the smallest of steps.

Thank you to everyone who came and shared so openly.

Our next Walthamstow Grief Café is on Saturday 15th August, 3.00–5.15pm. Whether you've joined us before or are thinking about coming for the first time, you'll be very welcome.
