Chislehurst Commons 180 acres of woods, grassland, heathland and several ponds make up Chislehurst Commons. For more information visit www.chislehurstcommons.uk

It is maintained by volunteers who give up 2000 hours a year to assist the Keepers and the board of Trustees and it is also a registered charity. Since 1888, an Act of Parliament has given legal powers to a Board of Trustees to manage and protect Chislehurst Commons. The 180 acres of land are privately owned and require two full time keepers and an army of volunteers to maintain them.

Is it really autumn? The shorter days, the nip in the air and the leaves on the ground tell us it is, but, following recent showers of rain., it’s the fresh greens of spring that catch the eye! 🍁🌿🍂🍁🌿🍂

There was a steady drizzle this morning, but, undeterred, our volunteers were out on the Cricket Ground, battling the brambles that have straggled outwards over the grass. A prickly job, but satisfying to see the progress made by the end of the session!

While the volunteers worked at Rush Pond today cutting back overhanging branches and clearing debris, Brian, one of the Trustees, and Toby, waded across to the island. The video shows the job of bringing the foliage and cut branches back to the bank! 🌿💦

Jonathan and Toby have cut the greenery in the pond to reduce the amount of nutrients going into the water when rain finally arrives and covers it. 🌧
The uncut area had to be left because the mud was too deep to walk over safely. The green plants that arrived so suddenly are likely to be goosefoot which was lying dormant in the bed of the pond. However, as it hasn’t flowered yet, it is difficult to make a positive identification. 🌿🌿🌿

More great news! We’re proud to be able to tell you that we have again achieved a Gold Award in the London in Bloom “Parks and Green Space” category. 💚⭐️
The photos show Jonathan receiving the certificate today at an Awards ceremony in London. The London in Bloom Capital Campaign aims to make Greater London a more pleasant place to live and to increase its biodiversity, to recognise the work of volunteers who support green spaces, and to encourage community involvement in caring for our environment.
Well done to all our volunteers and supporters, and to everyone who loves our commons here in Chislehurst! We will continue to do our best to maintain and enhance the 180 acres for the community and for the wildlife that lives here. 🦋🌳🐝🌸

On Saturday, the Cricket Ground was crowded with people enjoying the sunshine and the amazing B**r Festival in the beautiful surroundings of the common. Today, our volunteers began the annual task of managing the hedge. It is a mixed hedge of, for example, gorse, bramble, hawthorn, holly and blackthorn, and attracts butterflies, bees and other invertebrates, while also providing shelter for birds and small mammals. Another example from the natural world that thrives in our urban setting!

Today our volunteers tackled the reeds in Prickend Pond. The reeds act as natural filters taking out excess nutrients from the water, and provide important habitats for waterbirds and insect life. They are also an attractive feature of the pond for visitors. However, they need to be kept in check so they don’t spread too far. The work couldn’t be done earlier to protect any nesting wildlife. Although the pond looks dry, Wellie boots were definitely needed! 💦

Although any amount of rain in the weather forecast is most welcome at the moment, we were very disappointed that we had to cancel today’s walk on St. Paul’s Cray Common. The decision was taken for safety reasons after the Met Office issued a Yellow Weather Warning for thunderstorms. We cancelled a walk in June because a heatwave above 35 degrees was forecast, so we have not been lucky with our choice of dates this year. Thank you to all the people who signed up - we were very sorry not to meet you today. We will try again in the autumn, and hope that the weather will be kinder. The walks are offered to our mailing list. You can sign up at www.chislehurstcommons.uk/join-our-mailing-list/
