What does it take to make healthcare safer?

On in Ethiopia, healthcare leaders, providers and patients came together at Zewditu Memorial Hospital to discuss how patient safety can be strengthened across the health system.

The conversations highlighted the importance of making quality and safety part of everyday healthcare delivery, strengthening patient involvement, supporting healthcare workers, and using incident reporting to identify opportunities for improvement.
A patient testimony captured one important principle: “Nothing about us without us.”

The event also marked the launch of Ethiopia’s Electronic Patient Safety Incident Reporting System, an important step toward strengthening how safety incidents are reported and used to inform improvement.

Lifebox was pleased to participate, share our work in safer surgery and anesthesia, and connect with stakeholders working toward safer care.

Dr. Anteneh Yifru's, an anesthesia provider in Ethiopia, shows what this can mean in practice. For him and his team, training and access to a capnograph have changed how they monitor patients during anesthesia, helping them identify potentially life-threatening changes early, when there is still time to act.
