ARPAS-UK is the Association of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems. It is a trade association and professional body which supports and acts on behalf of the remotely piloted aircraft (RPAS) community, from start-up businesses to larger established operations. ARPAS-UK members continue to break new ground in markets where

RPAS (sometimes referred to as UAVs or drones) are delivering significant benefits. Members’ main markets include:

• TV & Movie
• Structures Inspection
• Linear Infrastructures (power lines, rail)
• Survey & Mapping
• Agriculture
• Emergency Services

On behalf of its members, ARPAS-UK works closely with the industry regulator CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) and Government departments to influence and ensure that the regulatory framework for the safe and professional operation of remotely piloted aircraft is fit for purpose and encourages best practice. It works in the public interest, and advocates professionalism within its membership through compliance with an agreed Code of Conduct and the holding of appropriate permissions. The Association takes progressive stances on national issues to embed the RPAS profession in all end-user industries, to enable it to continue to grow in reputation and influence.

Coventry City Council demonstrates the power of drone technology by conducting non-intrusive asset condition and retrofit feasibility surveys at a primary school to support their decarbonisation programme.

This shift from traditional methods resulted in significant annual savings estimated between £100,000 & £300,000, while simultaneously avoiding up to 2,000 hours of high-risk work at height (annualised across all assets).

The future of autonomous aviation is moving fast, and the legal framework must evolve with it.

The UK Law Commission’s latest work highlights the growing need for clear regulation, accountability, and operational standards for autonomous aircraft systems. From BVLOS operations to AI-enabled decision-making, the conversation is no longer theoretical: it’s becoming operational reality.

A crucial step toward enabling safe, scalable, and trusted autonomous flight in the UK.

This is a significant step towards greater transparency, accountability, and regulatory scrutiny across the UK economy.

𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐊 𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. As regulation evolves to support innovation, advanced air mobility, BVLOS operations, airspace modernisation, and scalable drone services, industry engagement with regulators has never been more important.

At ARPAS-UK, we continue to advocate for:
✅ Proportionate, innovation-friendly regulation
✅ Constructive engagement between industry and regulators
✅ Faster pathways for safe operational approvals
The UK drone ecosystem is progressing rapidly, with increasing momentum around BVLOS, infrastructure inspection, autonomy, and integrated airspace operations.

Transparency in regulatory performance is essential if the UK is to remain globally competitive in aviation innovation and emerging drone technologies.
