Join us for the second talk in our exclusive two part exploration into Holbein: Renaissance Master. Tom Caley ACR (ICON) FABCR talks about Holbein’s extraordinary drawing. He makes particular reference to the painting “The Ambassadors” which hangs in the National Gallery in London. Tom draws our attention to the remarkable way in which Holbein might have mapped the very precise rendering of the Cosmati Pavement in this painting.

This talk presents the point of view of an artist rather than that of an historian. To begin Tom explores Holbein’s outstanding drawing methods using the portrait drawings in the Royal Library at Windsor. He goes on to consider the possible means of projecting the complex design of the Cosmati pavement in formal perspective.

Date: Thursday 23 July

Time: 11am – 12.30pm

ABOUT TOM CALEY
Tom Caley trained in conservation at the National Maritime Museum after graduating from art school. During his 45 year career as a conservator he continued to practise as an artist. Two years ago he returned to study at the Royal College of Art. His art practice centres around over 50 years’ study of observational drawing and painting.

Working as a conservator of paintings gave Tom opportunities to study how great artists of the past achieved their marvellous results. He has used this insight to deepen his understanding of drawing and painting.

Artist Talk and Reception With Sheila Moylan

The Irish Cultural Centre is delighted to present a special evening drinks reception with Irish artist Sheila Moylan.

Join us at the ICC for an intimate Artist Talk exploring the relationship between myth and fact, abstract and figurative art, and how all this has contributed to Sheila’s unique work.

Sheila will speak about her creative process, the fairy stories and myths she grew up with and the drawings and sculptures featured in the current Clocha Geala exhibition. She will also talk about the art of the Boyne Valley as exemplified by Newgrange (Sid in Broige). Sheila’s passion for the monuments that inform her work is informed by deep research and study. She is currently working on a book on the megalithic art of Ireland from an artist’s point of view which she will discuss. There will also be a chance for guests to ask questions in an informal Q&A.

Alongside the talk, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the exhibition.
