📯THEY SAID WHAT!?!📯
“THEY DON’T LOOK LIKE YOU?”

💬At LGBT Mummies, with a community of 80,000 people globally, we often hear from people about the experiences they have, the assumptions made and the questions they are asked. 🏳️‍🌈

The questions are sometimes curious, sometimes educational, but unfortunately sometimes they’re invasive.

We have had multiple families say that they have heard “they don’t look like you” when being questioned about their children’s genetics, biology and why they don’t look like their parents.

Some people feel comfortable discussing this and are happy to educate and celebrate.

Others find it invasive and difficult and don’t want to share this, particularly when they have to explain the genetics, biology or ethnicity of their donor / other genetic parent who donated s***m or potentially eggs.

It is a completely personal choice whether you choose to share this, but many feel that it can be difficult at times to navigate these conversations, particularly when they happen in front of their children.

“In Japan, medical guidelines strictly limit fertility treatments to couples in legal or common law marriages. However, as the only G7 nation that does not recognize same-sex marriage, Japan effectively bars the q***r community from using Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) – this includes any laboratory procedure with human eggs, s***m or embryos.”

Being shut out of ART forces many hopeful parents in Japan to turn to complex and uncertain paths - from anonymous s***m donation online, to travelling abroad for treatment, or relying on discreet networks of clinics offering fertility care under the radar.

For families in our community, being excluded from ART isn’t just frustrating, it’s deeply unfair and discriminatory, where people are pushed towards complicated, costly, and sometimes unsafe alternatives just to grow their families. Everyone deserves equal, transparent access to fertility care, without having to navigate it in the shadows. 🏳️‍🌈

✏️COMMUNITY QUESTIONS: DID YOUR FAMILY AGREE WITH YOU STARTING A FAMILY?✏️
As a community, we have so many barriers to overcome and hurdles to face, but when it comes to starting a family there are often even more.
When a person, couple or people in our community decide to start a family, some are told:
💗”LGBTQ+ people shouldn’t be kids”
💜”Why would you want them?”
💛”Shouldn’t you just adopt?”
🧡”Don’t you want to carry your ‘own’ child?”
💚”We don’t think you should have any”
🤍”Ifs inappropriate”
🤎”Why is she/they/him carrying?”
🖤”We just don’t agree with it”
To hear this or things like this can be really harmful, and result in people losing a part of their Support Network- their family. In some cases, people’s relationships breakdown, are strained, and can have a real impact on their journey to become mothers or parents.
Did your family ‘agree’ that you should start a family? Were you met with excitement and happiness? Or was it met with confusion, anger or disagreement?

✨MOTHER’S DAY (US)✨
Today can be tough globally for so many, for some joyous, and for some that anxious wait.
Today is for ALL Mothers.
The Mother wanting to celebrate how lucky they are
The Mother-In-Waiting, waiting to become a Mother
The Mother who is missing their Mother
The Mother struggling with their role
The Mother who feels ‘less than’
The Mother doing the best they can
The Mother yearning for more
The Trans Mother who deserves to be included
The Non-Binary Mother who feel Mother is their chosen name
The Mother who is remembering babies that have passed
The Mother estranged from their children
The Mother who struggles with genetic loss
The Mother who fought for years to be a Mother
The Mother whose rights are being dialled back
The Mother who is fighting for access to their children
The Mother who can’t become a Mother due to lack of funding
The Mother sharing today because there’s two of them
The Non-Biological Mother who feel invalid at times

You are Valid. You are Loved. You are Seen. And you are important. 💗

📯THEY SAID WHAT!?!📯
“THEY’RE NOT REALLY YOUR KIDS”

It can be a minefield navigating people’s opinions, but when you start your journey to becoming a parent & beyond, you experience further micro aggressions, discrimination & ignorance.

Anyone else had this comment?

This came from an In-Law to my Wife, about the fact that two of our children (the ones not biologically related to her & ones she didn’t birth) were not as they deemed “really her” kids…
”Well, they’re not really yours are they?!” What does that mean?

💗Because they’re not genetically hers?
💗Because she didn’t carry them?

How do you even counteract a hurtful comment like that?

Her reply was that they were indeed her children, & that she loved them exactly the same, just as much & viewed them as such.

It then 🤔 the questions:

💗How do others then view the children that they themselves have no genetic links to?
💗Are they not your “nieces, nephews, grandchildren”?
💗And how will that impact your children if they hear those comments?
💗Will they then treat them differently?
💗Would they say it to someone who had adopted?
For me, I struggled deeply with this comment & the more I think about it the more I question the relationships we have, how people view the “validity” of our roles just based on genetics & how that will possibly impact how our children indeed feel about each other as siblings.
💗Has anyone else had this & how did you deal with it?
It’s a deeply difficult sentence to hear (one of many we’ll discuss & how they impact)
