Today, August 17, 2026, marks the 139th anniversary of the birth of Marcus Mosiah Garvey. A Jamaican Pan-Africanist, organiser and leader who championed Black self-determination, economic independence, community organisation and pride in Afrikan heritage.

Garvey reminds us to:
🌱 Build and support our own institutions
🌍 Know, honour and protect our heritage
🤝 Organise collectively and invest in community
🥕 Work towards greater food and economic self-sufficiency
📚 Share knowledge and empower the next generation

Last week, our Cultural Health Champions joined the Jamaican Independence Day celebration at Honor Oak Pub, where they offered free blood pressure readings and health checks. But one of our favourite parts was hearing directly from the community. 🥹🧡

We received such an amazing testimonial from one of the ladies who stopped by, and we’re sharing her words because THIS is what community health is about… feeling seen, supported and empowered to take charge of your health.

And we’re bringing that same energy to our Gardens this Sunday! 🌱

From blood pressure checks to honest conversations about our health, our Cultural Health Champions have been out in the community creating spaces where people can ask questions, get checked and feel supported.

We had such a good time at gbandfriends_ Sports Day, by Still working | Hybrid Athlete who leads a run club specifically for Black and brown people.

And we weren’t just there to check everyone else! 🏃🏾‍♀️ Our founder Valerie, ran and came 2nd place in a race! 🥈👏🏾

A beautiful reminder that movement is medicine, community is care, and prevention starts with knowing your numbers.

We’re looking forward to joining African Reparations Day 2026! ✊🏾

As we gather to discuss justice, liberation, and the future of our communities, we’re also creating space for something equally important, our health.

🌿 Visit our Cultural Health Champions for:
• Free blood pressure checks
• Health screenings
• Practical advice for your wellbeing

Black people are often diagnosed with high blood pressure and kidney disease earlier than other ethnic groups. So take the time to know your numbers.

One of the highlights of this year’s event is the keynote address from renowned Pan-African educator, and activist Dr. Umar. It’s set to be a powerful day of learning, culture, and community.

Join us for a FREE Afroecology Workshop delivered by GoGrowWithlove and The Earth Sistren Collective. On August 9th, Coco Collective- Ital Community Gardens is grateful to kick off this land-based workshop series, while sharing space with Black Rootz , Black Growth CIC , Sinéad, Aweside Farm & Black Butterfly 🌱

Afroecology is more than a way of growing food. It’s about remembering ancestral wisdom, caring for the land in harmony with nature, and building stronger, self-sustaining communities through collective action.

4 Week Workshop Series:
