From Portadown District LOL No. 1

Today our Worshipful District Master Nigel Dawson, Deputy District Master Alastair Power and our legal advisor Jamie Bryson met with Mr Justice O’Hara as part of his review into the Parades Commission.

We thank Mr Justice O’Hara for taking the time to engage and genuinely listen to our concerns and views.

This review was secured following our first successful Judicial Review, and is a more in depth analysis of the structures and procedures of the Commission than had ever before been achieved.

We had a productive meeting, and raised a number of points with the Judge including:

1. The importance of the Commission applying their Human Rights legal obligations properly and recognising the starting point of the presumption that parades should proceed without interference.
2. The requirement for an independent appeals mechanism, rather than the Commission reviewing itself.
3. Those objecting to parades should be required to demonstrate a sufficient interest, and be able to establish which of their rights, if any, are in fact engaged as a matter of law before their views are taken into account.
4. People should not be able to come along and claim to be speaking for Residents without a clear mandate to do so (I.e a bona fide organisation with structures and a constitution).
5. The Commission must recognise their adjudicative function is to simply apply the law. It is not to balance political or communal interests and find a compromise. The law must be applied equally and consistently.

We look forward to Mr Justice O’Hara’s report, and proceed on the basis that self evidently the Secretary of State should lay its contents before Parliament and the public.

Well done to all the brethren, sisters, juniors, bandsmen and women and supporters who turned out last night to support Portadown District LOL No. 1. 🧡💜

The spirit at Drumcree last night was something to behold. Over 10,000 gathered, not for trouble, not for confrontation — but to support Portadown Orange District LOL 1 God given right to walk home from church.

This is about so much more than a 300 metre stretch of road. This is about tradition, about faith, and about the right to finish a church parade that has been walked for over 200 years. The Drumcree Church service is a religious service. The parade home from it is part of that worship. That traditional route down the Garvaghy Road matters because it IS the route home.

Look at the contrast in behaviour over these last matter of weeks:

* Have obeyed every single instruction from the Parades Commission
* Accepted a reduced parade of just 35 men
* No bands. No supporters. Silence
* Stayed behind barriers at Drumcree Church when they were blocked
* Acted with complete discipline and respect for the law, even when provoked
* Left the area quietly when told to

(Sinn Fein / Garvaghy Road mob)
* Illegally blocked the Kings Highway for 15 days
* The First Minister herself attended an unlawful protest
* Defied the rule of law, then ran to court to talk about the rule of law
* Celebrated when a lawful parade was banned
* Threats of violence by “dissident” republicans

The Orangemen are not asking for anything extra. They are not asking to march where they have never marched before. They are simply asking for the lawful right to finish their church parade home, as they have done for generations.

The support last night shows that the Unionist people will not abandon Drumcree. Dignified, lawful and respectful. That is what Unionism looks like at its best. United we stand - no surrender.

All roads lead to Portadown tomorrow night. For those bringing buses we ask that you come off at Asda an De-bus and your buses will be directed to a parking area further up Bridge street. Please use car parks around the town for parking. We strongly encourage that people do not park on the town plaza in front of the Church as this will be for the rally and please work with our Marshalls on the night.

Festival of Remembrance

Monday 9th November 2026

19:30 in Bovevagh Parish Centre.

They are holding a Festival of Remembrance as above featuring local artists and bands, as well as holding a short Service and Act of Remembrance.

This will be a ticketed event, purely to control numbers - with donations on the night to the UDR Benevolent Fund and Royal British Legion.

200 tickets printed and will distribute on a first come first served basis.

PORTADOWN DISTRICT LOL 1
PARADE & RALLY – SATURDAY 24TH OCTOBER

Portadown District LOL 1 will be holding a Parade and Rally in Portadown this Saturday night, and we encourage the entire Orange family to come out in their colours, alongside the wider unionist community, to demonstrate the strength of feeling within our community.

For us, this is about more than a parade. It is about the rule of law, the right to peaceful assembly, and the principle that lawful decisions must be upheld.

Our community has every reason to be angry and deeply disappointed at the decision to overturn our lawful parade determination following the threat of Republican violence. We believe the actions of the Chief Constable and Secretary of State have undermined confidence in the rule of law and sent a deeply troubling message about whether lawful decisions will be respected when faced with threats and intimidation.

Let us not forget that, after 28 years of being denied the right to complete our traditional parade along the Garvaghy Road, a determination was finally made in our favour, with the matter also considered by the Court of Appeal and the High Court. Yet that opportunity was subsequently lost.

This Saturday night, we ask you to stand with Portadown District and make your voice heard peacefully and with dignity.

• Route: From Watson Street to Portadown town centre, where a short rally will take place, before the parade returns to Watson Street.

We encourage the Orange family and the wider unionist community to turn out, show their support and demonstrate the strength of feeling across our community.

PORTADOWN DISTRICT LOL 1 – PARADE & RALLY ANNOUNCEMENT

Portadown District LOL 1 can confirm that a Parade and Rally will be held in Portadown on Saturday 24th October 2026. Further details will be announced over the coming weekend.
We encourage the wider Unionist family to come out, stand together and show their support. Your continued solidarity and encouragement are greatly appreciated.

For the avoidance of doubt, there will be no parade or rally taking place in Portadown this weekend. We ask everyone to take note of this clarification.

Over the past three weeks, we have been deeply encouraged by the support shown to us by our local community, the wider Orange family and the Unionist community as a whole.

Statement from Portadown District LOL 1

With legal proceedings ongoing against the Secretary of State in relation to his order prohibiting our notified parade along the Garvaghy Road, Portadown District LOL 1 will make no further substantive comment on the matter until the court proceedings have concluded.

After 28 years of negative determinations, all of which we have abided by, we finally received a positive determination, only for it to be rescinded in the wake of an unlawful blockade of the road. This raises deeply concerning questions about the protection of the rule of law and whether those who comply with the law are being treated fairly when others take matters into their own hands.

The rule of law must mean exactly that: the law applies to everyone, without exception. It cannot be right that a lawful parade determination can be overturned in circumstances where an unlawful blockade has prevented the route from being completed. Such a situation raises serious concerns about the consequences for the future of lawful parading and the authority of the institutions responsible for upholding the law.

While we await the outcome of the legal proceedings, one point must be made unequivocally: Portadown District LOL 1 has no confidence in the Chief Constable of the PSNI to protect the rule of law in the face of those who seek to undermine it.

We will await the court's decision before making any further substantive comment.
