A huge thank you to Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service for visiting our King’s Lynn centre today!

Our students enjoyed learning about careers within the fire service, the skills required for the role, and the different pathways available to those interested in emergency services.

Visits like these are a really important part of enrichment at Open Road. They help our students explore future career options, meet professionals from different industries, and start thinking about what might come next.

During the visit, the team were called away to respond to a fire, giving our students a very real insight into the important role Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service play in our community.

A huge thank you to Norfolk Fire and Rescue for spending time with us today, and for everything you do to keep Norfolk safe.

Today kicks off the start of Learning Disability Week, so we’d like to take this opportunity to recognise the young people with learning disabilities who attend Open Road each week. Many of our students are capable, talented and eager to learn. Sometimes they just need an environment, teaching style or level of support that differs from mainstream education.

One thing we’ve learned over the years is that struggling in mainstream education and struggling to learn are not the same thing. So this year’s theme, “Do you see me?”, is one that feels very relevant to our work.

We believe every young person deserves access to education, qualifications and opportunities, regardless of the challenges they face. Learning Disability Week is a reminder that inclusion is about access but It’s also about making sure young people have a genuine opportunity to succeed once they’re through the door.

Construction is officially under construction! 🚧

One lorry-mounted crane, 2 shipping containers and 3 hours of precision container positioning…

The next piece of our Thetford construction training area is officially in place!

More updates to come as the project continues to take shape, but it’s safe to say the construction training area at our Thetford centre is going to be top notch!

This Carers Week, we're supporting the theme of Building Carer Friendly Communities. We thought we'd hand the microphone to someone who knows exactly why that matters.

In this short video, Emily talks about her son Jack's experience of education before Open Road, and one of the biggest changes she's seen since he joined us. Open Road exists as a support network not only for mainstream education, but also for parents, carers and guardians. Sometimes it takes a village to make sure every young person's needs are met, and we're proud to be part of that community.

A huge thank you to Emily for sharing her perspective, and to all the parents, carers and guardians who continue to support young people every day.

Feel like you could do with some support when it comes to your young person's education? Send us a message via our website, we'd love to chat! Link in bio.

Continuing with Volunteers' Week, we'd like to say a huge thank you to Poppy, who recently completed her work experience placement with Open Road.

When we talk about volunteering, it's easy to picture it in only one way. But volunteering, supporting a cause and getting involved in your community can take many different forms. Poppy threw herself into life at Open Road, helping out wherever she was needed and becoming a valued part of the team during her placement.Thank you, Poppy. We hope you enjoyed your time with us, and we wish you all the best for whatever comes next!

If you have skills in a certain area but have never considered volunteering them, Volunteers' Week is a great time to rethink. We are actively looking for mechanics and construction volunteers, but if you are a whizz with admin, a student looking to help out, or someone with time and skills to share, please get in touch.

It takes a village to respond to the NEET crisis, and we would love to hear from you.

Thanks again, Poppy, for a sterling job well done!

As part of Volunteers' Week, we're asking a simple question:

Could you spare a few hours to help a young person find their path?

At Open Road, we believe everyone has something valuable to pass on. Whether you've spent 30 years in industry, run your own business, or taken a less traditional route through life, your experience could make a real difference to a young person who needs it.

Not sure if volunteering is for you? Why not take a look at what we do and see if it sparks something.

More information about our volunteering opportunities in Thetford, email Billie at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or visit our website, link in bio.

This Volunteers' Week, we'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who gives their time to support Open Road.

Whether it's sharing industry knowledge, mentoring students, helping out in the workshop, supporting events, or simply being another positive adult in a young person's life, please know that your contribution makes such a difference.

Open Road simply wouldn't be the same without the volunteers, supporters and community partners who choose to get involved.

Thank you for everything you do, and Happy Volunteers' Week! ⭐

We were delighted to welcome a group of Norfolk businesses to Open Road earlier this month, all keen to learn more about what we do and what a community response to the NEET crisis could look like.

It was a brilliant evening. Our graduate students carried out vehicle health checks for guests, we held timed tyre-changing challenges, and our friends at Miganglia brought along a VR welding station that proved very popular!

Most importantly, it gave local employers the opportunity to meet our students, see their skills first-hand, and gain a better understanding of the barriers some young people face in accessing education and employment.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and to Norfolk Community Foundation for connecting everyone. The more conversations we can have between education and industry, the more opportunities we can create for young people across Norfolk.

If you're a local business and would like to join that conversation, we'd love to hear from you. We're always looking to connect students with apprenticeship opportunities, workplace experiences and industry professionals willing to share their skills and knowledge. Visit our website to get in touch, link in bio.

Earlier this month we were honoured to host Baroness Stedman-Scott OBE, Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, and Julia nix OBE from the Department for Work and Pensions - DWP for a tour of our centre in Thetford, where we discussed all things NEET and the effect the NEET crisis is having on young people across Norfolk.

At Open Road, we genuinely believe the best response to the NEET crisis is a community response, one where schools, businesses and organisations work together to ensure young people don’t fall through the gaps. We recognise this is not a failing of any one institution; schools and services are working incredibly hard to support young people. But sometimes a wider net needs to be cast to reach the most vulnerable, and that’s where community plays such an important role.

If you’re a local business, school or organisation in Thetford or King’s Lynn and would like to be part of that conversation, whether through time, skills, opportunities or support, we’d love to hear from you. Please reach out via our website, link in bio. Your support could help a young person in Norfolk bypass NEET and start asking, “What’s next?”
