PREPAREDNESS - WHYTHE NEED FOR AN EMERGENCY PLAN - PART 1 (PART 2 WILL FOLLOW - MAKING AN EMERGENCY PLAN):

Why do we need one? In July 2026 the Government released its Resilience Action Plan - in it they made clear improving domestic resilience is fundamental to UK national security. A core aspect of this strategy is that resilience to crises cannot be managed by the government alone. They want people/households to start preparing for events such as disruption and emergencies. Minister for Security, Dame Angela Eagle, said "The actions that individuals, households, communities and businesses can take to strengthen their own preparedness is vital". A poll showed only 13% of UK adults feel their household is prepared for a major crisis, and just 4% of people currently have the recommended three-day supply of bottled water.
Below are Government infographics explaining why we need to be prepared and how they think we should go about it.

Gardening - It's time to plant garlic:
It needs very little space and can be grown in pots or tubs. Give it a go. It can be bought online or in garden centres. You could even break up a shop-bought one into separate cloves and plant them.

GARDENING - WHY YOU SHOULD GROW HEIRLOOM SEEDS:

All heirlooms are open-pollinated plants - pollination occurs from insects, wind, birds, etc., passing pollen from plant to plant. In Heirloom varieties any seeds hold true to their parent's traits.

HEIRLOOM OR MODERN (HYBRID OR F1) SEEDS:
Modern seeds are bred specifically for high yields, uniform size, stress tolerance, and built-in resistance to common plant diseases. But, any seeds saved from the hybrid plant will not carry the same traits as the parent plants.

BEST ADVICE - GROW BOTH.

Should there come a day when F1/Hybrid seeds are hard to find, you'll be glad you have some Heirlooms tucked away.
