WE DID IT!
TWENTY-EIGHT AND A HALF MILES!
The weather was beautiful. A slight headwind which was really quite refreshing.
Up hill and down dale, along cycle tracks, paths, side roads and the occasional main road all conquered.
Wonderful support from our Club members at Yarmouth, Cowes, Newport and Ryde.
Massive encouragement from members of the public along the way and also in the towns where further donations were made.
Our fund raising page total currently stands at £790.
In addition we raised £124 along the way with donations and the sale of crocus corms.
AND we still have crocus corms for sale where we hope to raise a further £600!
Our fundraiser page will remain open throughout November so if you can share the page with your friends and family please do.

Rotary on the Wight are supporting the Rotary International Campaign to Eradicate Polio. With the generous support of 'Wight Cycle Hire' with the loan of two e-bikes, Rotarians Paul Wheeler and Ian Pratt are cycling from Yarmouth Harbour to Ryde Esplanade to raise awareness of the Rotary campaign this event is taking place this Saturday October 31st. We are selling purple crocus corms at £2 for a bag of 10 corms at PC's Café Watergate Road Newport. Also, BUT ONLY ON Saturday 31st October - Yarmouth Harbour between 9.30am and 10.30am; Cowes Esplanade between 11.15am and 12.30pm; St James Square Newport between 1.00pm and 2.00pm and in Ryde outside the Ryde Suoerbowl from 3.00pm to 4.00pm.

Since 1979 Rotary has been fighting polio. In 1988 Rotary launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative together with the World Health Organisation. At the time there were over 350,000 cases of polio worldwide and the virus was endemic in 125 countries. By 2025 there were just 38 cases and the disease is endemic in just two countries. This is a 99.9% reduction! Polio can spread rapidly from person to person, such as through a cough or a sneeze. If an infected person doesn’t wash their hands after coughing or using the toilet, they can transmit the virus even if they don’t know they’re infected. Polio can also spread through contaminated water in areas with poor sanitation. In 2022, an adult in New York, USA, contracted polio and was paralyzed. Genetic testing of the virus infecting that person linked it to polio viruses found in London and Jerusalem. This shows that as long as polio exists somewhere in the world, nobody is truly safe. Since 2013 The Bill Gates Foundation has pledged that for every 1$ raised by Rotary, it will donate 2$. HELP ROTARY ERADICATE POLIO

Supported by Wight Cycle Hire with the generous loan of three e-bikes, Rotarians Paul Wheeler, David Langdon and Ian Pratt will cycle from Yarmouth Harbour to Ryde Esplanade via Cowes and Newport on 31st October.

They are doing this to raise awareness of the Rotary campaign to eradicate polio.
In 1985 when there were over 350,000 cases of polio Rotary launched a mass immunisation programme to eradicate polio from the world.

Polio paralyses, polio cripples, polio is virulent, polio attacks children.
In 2025 the number of confirmed cases was down to 38 an amazing 99.9% reduction.

However, until it is completely eradicated there is always the possibility of an epidemic.

Just last year the polio virus was found in sewage in three places in the United Kingdom.

Donations are invited to support the campaign and for every pound donated the Bill Gates Foundation donates two! Making every gift three times more valuable.

We were out and about at Tesco recently with our tombola, raising awareness of Rotary and it’s work supporting the community. We were helped by a passing Stormtrooper who was ready with his light sabre!

Pausing for a rest he is alerted by noises behind him. Is this the rebels he has to capture. He seeks them here. He seeks them there but…..they are nowhere to be found. Now he must press on to Tesco’s Ryde 19th September 10.00am. Will the rebels be there???
