(271)

We are The Kirkwood; a thriving, vibrant, and vital community spread right across Kirklees. From our employees and our patients, to our donors, volunteers, and supporters, every single one of them is part of The Kirkwood movement. We help to improve the quality of life for local people, against all the odds. When time is short, we help everyone in our care to live well and make the most of every single day. We make the complex simple by focussing on what's important. And we support families and loved ones to live on - and live well. If there’s one thing that defines us more than anything it’s support - the one thing that keeps The Kirkwood running. Because in supporting The Kirkwood we’re all supporting life itself - constantly working to help improve it against all of the odds. The Kirkwood Support Life.

As the colder months arrive, our wonderful kitchen team are serving up a taste of autumn, with delicious, warming meals made using fresh, seasonal ingredients, including produce grown right here in The Kirkwood's gardens!

Led by Head Chef Matthew Horsfield, the team have been busy creating a comforting autumn menu featuring homemade soups, hearty main courses and traditional warm puddings.

Thanks to our dedicated gardening volunteers, fresh vegetables, herbs and other produce make their way from garden to plate, sometimes in just a matter of hours!

But it's about so much more than food. Every meal is carefully prepared with the individual tastes, preferences and needs of our patients in mind, helping bring comfort, happiness and a little taste of home.

A huge thank you to our incredible kitchen team and gardening volunteers for everything they do!

When Danielle lost her beloved mum Sarah to cancer in August 2024, her world changed forever.

During Sarah's final weeks, The Kirkwood provided care, comfort and compassion, helping her feel safe while supporting the whole family through an incredibly difficult time.

Now, Danielle and her best friend Becca are turning their experiences of loss into something positive.

Throughout October, they've taken on Miles for Memories, completing a mile every day in memory of loved ones while raising vital funds for The Kirkwood.

It's a beautiful reminder that even through grief, something extraordinary can grow.

A massive congratulations to 11-year-old Will Dunk, who has raised an astonishing ÂŁ5,412 for The Kirkwood after completing an incredible 18 mile walking challenge in memory of his beloved grandad, Russell Scott!

On Saturday 12th September, Will walked from The Foresters Arms in Lower Cumberworth, his grandad's favourite local pub, all the way to Hillsborough, the home of their beloved Sheffield Wednesday.

But this wasn't just any walk.

Will followed the very same route his grandad used to drive when taking him to watch the Owls, making every mile a special tribute to the memories they shared together.

Russell sadly died in February this year, aged 64, after receiving specialist care from The Kirkwood. Will wanted to give something back to help other local families receive the same compassion and support.

Originally hoping to raise ÂŁ1,000, Will has absolutely smashed his target, raising more than FIVE TIMES his original goal!

We're incredibly proud of Will and want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported his remarkable fundraising efforts.

You're an inspiration, Will, and your grandad would be so proud!

For more than 40 years, Susan has stood alongside The Kirkwood.

Susan Parlor’s connection stretches right back to the very beginning. After seeing an article about plans to establish a hospice in Huddersfield, Susan knew it was something she wanted to support and went on to start a support group in Holmfirth.

Since then, she has fundraised, volunteered and taken part in countless events, including the Starlight Walk, Sunflower Memories and Light Up a Life.

But Susan’s connection is deeply personal too. Having lost her mum when she was just 13, she has always been passionate about the importance of dignity and compassionate care at the end of life. Decades later, The Kirkwood’s nurses also helped to care for her son when he became ill with cancer.

Susan said: “I was there at the very opening, right at the start, the first brick. That was over 40 years ago. I’ve supported The Kirkwood ever since, and I’ve done everything I could over the years. It’s something I’ve always been passionate about.”

Susan’s remarkable story shows just what it means to be part of The Kirkwood a community of people who have been helping us Support Life for generations.
