National Wildlife Day 🦡🦊🦇🦉🦌

This National Wildlife Day, we are reminding you about the steps you should take if you find an injured wild animal.
We know how strong the instinct is to help wildlife in distress, but trying to care for wild animals at home can sometimes do more harm than good:

💔 Delays in specialist treatment can reduce a wild animal's chances of survival.
⚠️ Close contact can spread disease and cause unnecessary stress.
🧠 Wildlife that becomes too accustomed to people may struggle to survive once released.

Here's how you can make the biggest difference:

📞 Contact a wildlife rescue or vet straight away.

To help us respond quickly, please have ready:

📍 The exact location – ideally using what3words
📸 Photos or videos if possible, which help our Wildlife Care Team assess the situation
🚗 Whether you are able to transport the animal to a vet or to Secret World Wildlife Rescue, if appropriate

We prioritise the most urgent cases. If we can't confirm that intervention is needed, we may not be able to send a responder. Our Reception Team includes dedicated volunteers giving their time to help wildlife, so please treat them with kindness and patience.

📚 **Back to school… but what a summer we have had!** 🦔

As children and young people head back to school this week, we are looking back on a brilliant summer for our Education Team!

We have been out and about meeting our local communities, including a visit to **Chard Reservoir**, where we learnt all about the fascinating world of bats and bugs and why they are so important to our ecosystems. 🦇🐝

At **Pride in Priorswood** in Taunton, we got creative making hedgehogs from old books, while learning how we can help wildlife cope during hot weather. 🦔☀️

We have also been busy at home at Secret World, running our summer holiday activities for young people. **Wild Academy: Back to Nature** gave young nature enthusiasts the chance to explore the natural world, while our **Working with Wildlife Course** introduced young people interested in a future career in wildlife rehabilitation to the work we do here at Secret World.

And now, as we head into the new school year, we are already looking ahead!

Eight cygnets, one very unusual rescue 🦢

Last week, eight cygnets were found on a road in Somerset. A member of the public managed to secure them safely while police attended, before contacting Secret World Wildlife Rescue.

We don't currently routinely admit waterbirds, but this was an exceptional situation. With other rescues unable to accommodate the group, our team reviewed the risks, put additional biosecurity measures in place and made the decision to give the cygnets temporary care.

It took a real team effort to get them safely back to Secret World. Sadly, one of the cygnets was too weak to recover and was euthanased on welfare grounds.

The remaining seven have now been returned to the wild where they were reunited with some of their family.

🦔 Please don’t leave wildlife outside our building

An important reminder to members of the public who bring injured, sick or vulnerable wildlife to us.

This week, sadly, we have had two young hedgehogs left outside our building without anyone calling ahead to let us know they were coming or that they had arrived.

We have staff on site between 6am and midnight, and there is an emergency mobile number on the sign outside our door for when staff are not on-site.

🦔 Never leave injured wildlife unattended outside.

Calling ahead means we can make sure someone is available to receive the animal, assess the situation and get them the care they need as quickly as possible. 💚

A lucky escape for one very special hedgehog 🦔

This little lady arrived at Secret World Wildlife Rescue after being found caught in a rat trap. Thankfully, she had no obvious injuries, but we were concerned she may have been exposed to poison.

Because of her size and the time of year, our vet team performed an ultrasound and discovered that she was pregnant!

She was closely monitored for several days for any signs of internal bleeding. Thankfully, she showed no signs of haemorrhage, making it unlikely that she had ingested any poison.

Once we were confident she was well, it was time to head back to the wild. She was released with support feeds and a hedgehog house available if she chose to nest there.

We were so pleased to get this expectant mum back into the wild as soon as possible, so she could have her hoglets where they belong. 🦔
