Avalon Camps is a local charity based in Somerset, which gives children from the City of Bristol, between the ages of 8 and 9, an opportunity to have a holiday in the countryside The camps give them the chance to do something totally different; to learn, play and sleep in the great outdoors, visit local farms and take part in new activities. These are each five days long and take place at the begi
nning of the school summer holidays, with 64 children attending over the two camps. These are each five days long and take place at the beginning of the school summer holidays, with 32 children attending each camp. They all sleep in tents and eat together in a marquee. It takes around 200 volunteers to make the camps happen. As well as the committee, which works throughout the year on organisation and fundraising, and the young leaders who work directly with the children, there are numerous other volunteering roles – to name a few: cooks, cleaners, washers-up, sandwich-makers, helpers to set up the tents and the marquee and night security. The camps cost about £18,000 a year and are funded entirely through donations and fundraising. A few words from the children…
Brandon: “On Jordan’s birthday the Camp Leaders organised a surprise birthday treat for Jordan. A fire engine came and it squirted us all.”
Rommel: "During camp I got a medal for ‘best boy’. I loved every single day"
Kayleigh: “The whole week was brilliant. I got to sleep in a tent for the first time. Even though I was a bit scared, I went on the pirate ship. Thank you everyone!”
David: “It was really fun sleeping in a tent with my friends.”
