We are creating a nature reserve on a former landfill site for the benefit of wildlife and the public The aim is to create a nature reserve accessible to all.

The Headley Down Nature Reserve is next to the Heatherlands Recreation Ground.

Autumn colours are looking lovley in the sunshine this morning. Hope many of you will enjoy a walk round to see how they are changing every day.

Sadly, despite our best efforts with watering, the Jubilee Squirrels' Walnut tree in the Nuttery died during the spell of very hot weather this summer. We will be replacing it later in the Autumn. Hopefully, all the other young trees seem to have survived.

We are so pleased to see the trees on the nature reserve are already recovering a little after the rain. We managed to take water up for those that were suffering most during the drought, including the Tenth Anniversary Magnolia which seems to have survived. If any have died, we'll replace them in the spring. Grass is already regrowing and as the ground softens, we'll be replacing the numbered posts in Erie Wood.

Some of you may remember Phyllis Worman who was born in Headley Down and grew up in Arford. Her daughter, Jane, has set up a GoFundMe page in memory of her mother who died recently aged 89. The donations will be for our charity as nature conservation was always very important to Phyllis. We are very grateful to Jane for thinking of us and send our condolences to her and all the family and friends of Phyllis, together with thanks for their support for the nature reserve.

Those of you with a numbered tree in the Erie Wood area of the nature reserve will be pleased to hear that, thanks to funding from EHDC Councillors Anthony Williams and Richard Millard, we will gradually be replacing the broken posts. The numbers will be transferred to new recycled plastic posts which should last for many years. Some of the trees have grown substantially and no longer need posts for support so short ones can be used just to keep the numbers for identification.

We're really pleased that so many young people are enjoying spending warm evenings on the nature reserve. We'd like to thank all those who take the time to put their litter in the bins on the playing field, and we're particularly grateful to some of our regular visitors who pick up and bin the litter they find that isn't even their own! Some of the more recently planted trees are suffering in the heat and we are doing our best to bring water to the most needy cases on an almost daily basis. Summer is great but we are hoping for a bit of rain before long!

The nature reserve trustees are in talks with the District Council with the aim of taking over the treatment of the small areas of Japanese Knotweed on the site. We are therefore looking for a local contractor who has up to date certification for Knotweed management. Can anybody help us?

It's World Bee Day today and so good to see ten pre-school children enjoying our story-telling area, bee spotting and learning about them. Our nature reserve is one of their favourite places to visit so we hope to see you all again very soon.

Today we welcomed a visit from Councillors Anthony Williams and Adeel Shah who came to see our 10th Anniversary Tree. Together with Councillor Richard Millard, they had funded the project to prepare the site and plant the tree, a Magnolia Grandiflora 'Exmouth', chosen for its large, fragrant white flowers, which are a popular, nectar-rich foraging spot for honey bees and bumblebees. A plaque has been put in place to celebrate 10 years of our work on the nature reserve and to thank the funders. More shrubs and trees will be planted nearby in the autumn. We hope the tree will bring pleasure to all our visitors over many years to come.
