Did you know seven local people started Fromebase on an Edventure course?

Back in February 2025, they came together around an idea: to design, create and launch a DIY pop-up shop in Frome.

They spoke to the community.....researched whether it could work.....created the brand.....and tested a tiny version before committing to the real thing.

And look at Fromebase now.

This version only opened a few months ago, and it’s already running workshops, serving up coffee and cake, and helping people find useful DIY treasures that might otherwise go to waste.

They didn’t start with a shop. They started with an idea, then worked out what to do next.

That’s exactly what our next Edventure course, Enterprising Together, is designed to help you do with your own idea.

You’ll get the time, support and structure to explore it properly, whether it’s big, small or still a bit rough around the edges.

It’s all about taking those first steps.

Enterprising Together starts Friday 11 September in Frome.

We are here to help. Our in person programme Enterprising Together is starting again soon, and it's all about giving you what you need to build momentum and make your idea happen.

This course is open to everyone, whatever your background or stage of life.
Enrolment is open now!

Some join for free (fully-funded) thanks to funding from Somerset Council.

The course will be on Fridays from 9.15 a.m. to 2.45 p.m. at the Edventure Hub in Frome. The course begins on 11 September 2026 and ends on 29 January 2027 (excluding holidays)

“Redundancy came suddenly, and I was left asking: what next?”

Louise recently took the plunge and started her own business, Step Forward with Louise.

She joined Enterprising Together, our in-person programme in Frome, and used the time to start making it happen

She shared this lovely reflection on the experience ↓

It was a challenging time. I had the beginnings of a business idea, but I was still searching for a new sense of purpose
and identity—and there were a few false starts along the way.

Then a friend sent me a link to Edventure’s Enterprising Together course. After a chat with Colin, who runs it, I signed up.

The course helped me turn a small idea into a real business. It gave me confidence, practical tools and approaches that have proved invaluable.

Just as importantly, it gave me a supportive community. Starting out on your own can feel lonely, so sharing this experience with others in the same situation - and receiving hands-on help with things such as my website made a huge difference.

Redundancy, retirement, divorce, or children leaving home can bring freedom and possibility, but also uncertainty and a loss of identity. This experience shaped my business. I support people to reconnect with what matters most, understand what may be holding them back and support them to take practical steps towards greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.

One of the brilliant tutors joining us for Enterprising Together is Gemma from Business Skills Hub Limited.

Gemma will be running two practical sessions:

Basic accounting and cash flow for your business
How to build a useful business plan

Her aim is for people to leave with “more confidence in their finances and a clearer path for what their business is”.

These sessions are just one part of Enterprising Together, our in-person programme for anyone who is interested in giving their idea for a business a go.

You don’t need to arrive with a polished business plan or a big entrepreneurial ambition. You’ll get dedicated time each week to explore and develop your idea, practical workshops covering useful business skills, and a supportive group of people who are figuring things out alongside you. Everyone brings something different to the table.

The next course starts on Friday 11 September at the Edventure Hub Co-Working Space in Frome, running from 9:15am to 2:45pm each Friday.

Some people pay for their own place, while others can join fully funded, at no cost to them, thanks to Somerset Council funding.

Meet Tony, one of the local friendly faces who works from the Edventure Hub, our coworking space in Frome.

“I’m Tony McNicol. I help businesses tell their story with copywriting and photography. If you look hard enough, there’s an interesting and human story behind every business, even the ones that seem most ordinary!”

“It’s been a long and winding path! I studied Classics at university before travelling to Japan, where I worked as a freelance photographer and writer for over a decade.

“In the process, I learned Japanese, so when we moved back to Somerset in 2013, my wife and I set up a translation company. Very recently, I shifted back to writing and photography in the form of my new business, Story Focus.”

“Right now, I’m working with a two-Michelin-star chef in London to produce photos, copy and a website for his new business.

“I’ve also got two pro bono photography and writing projects on the go: one taking portraits of allotment owners in Frome, and another documenting the work of Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue, our local mountain rescue team.”

“I’ve worked freelance or for myself for almost my whole career, and it can be quite lonely. It’s great to get out of the house and meet people. I particularly enjoy learning about other people’s work.”

What do you do for fun?

“I play two sports: the Japanese martial art of kendo and, since last week, pickleball.”

What might people be surprised to learn about you or your work?

“I interviewed and photographed many celebrities in Japan, including sumo wrestlers, kabuki actors, pop stars, chefs, CEOs and the chap who played Pigsy in the 1970s TV series Monkey.”

Meet Orrin, one of the friendly local people who works from the Edventure Hub, our coworking space on Park Hill Drive (nearby the Welshmill Park).

“I’m Orrin Keep and I’m a freelance sound designer for video games, currently working for Grinding Gear Games on Path of Exile 2. I record sounds and shape them into assets that go into an action fantasy game that gets updated a few times a year with new content.”

“I got into audio when I was an early teen, and bounced around a few different disciplines before landing on game sound design. I went to university in Manchester and graduated in 2025, then started freelancing from there.”

“Path of Exile 2 is definitely my biggest achievement. So far I’ve worked on two expansions that have been played by millions of people, and I am working the job I dreamt about since I was 18.”

“Being a fully remote worker, I was tired of spending all my working time in my bedroom and wanted the sense of community and productivity that I had at university, where I would go and do work on campus. Researching coworking spaces in Frome led me to find Edventure, and I love how informal and friendly the atmosphere is here. It really feels like I have my own office space I can go to so that when I’m at home, I can switch my brain off ‘work mode’.”

“My job is probably my main passion in life, but outside of that I enjoy playing other games to hear how they sound, reading sci-fi, and building and painting minis.”

“People would probably be surprised at what I record for my work. So far I’ve recorded pinecones rattling around metal pans, plastic bottles squeaking against each other, plenty of my own voice, and even pushed microphones into balloons to hear what it’s like inside!”
