Community Fridge: Frome

Community Fridge: Frome The UK's first Community Fridge in Frome! We're all about fighting food waste and the fridge is free and open to all.

Community Fridge: Frome
- enabling you to share your abundance, minimise waste and source free food. Launched on 30th April 2016 at the Loop de Loop, near Frome Library. Help yourself to what's on the shelf

Edventure: Frome with support from Frome Town Council have launched the UK’s first community fridge on Saturday 30th April. The fridge, stationed at the colourful Loop de Loop block, near Fro

me library, is open every day to enable residents and businesses to share surplus food and for anyone to help themselves to quality food that would otherwise be wasted. The stats around food waste in the UK are shocking. The average household throws away £470 worth of food every year. Every day we throw away 220,000 loaves of bread, 5 million potatoes, and 660,000 eggs. And at the same time it is estimated that 4 million people live in food poverty in the UK. Esther Deeks, project co-ordinator said “Most of the food waste in the UK is avoidable and could have been eaten had it been better managed. The fridge is a simple solution to enable anyone in Frome to share some of this surplus food – cutting costs and emissions. Let’s utilise our food and fight against waste. Recovering the time and energy that went into producing our food, and enjoying it!”

Donate to the fridge whether you are going away for the weekend, just bought too much food or It's the end of the business day and you have excess. Anyone can take food from the fridge, it’s free and accessible to everyone. The fridge will accept any kind of vegetables, bread, sandwiches and alike all within their use by date. To avoid any issues with food hygiene the fridge will not home raw meat, fish or eggs. And can only accepted prepared and cooked foods from certified businesses, NOT home cooked meals. We commit to providing a chilled clean and safe space monitored daily by trained volunteers. Would you like to volunteer as part of our team? contact us [email protected]

Community fridges have been successfully implemented across Europe and is the first of it's kind in the UK! email [email protected]

“It makes you wonder home much used to go to landfill before the Community Fridge was here”

Kevin is one of our dedicated Community Fridge volunteers. After retiring, he started helping out at the fridge, making sure it’s open, stocked, and ready for the community. From busy Christmas surplus to everyday essentials, he sees first-hand how much food is shared and how quickly it’s used by the community.
