πŸ“Ÿ The arrival of hot weather meant that the crew at Filey had a busy bank holiday weekend, with three incidents across three days and both boats being launched on service. πŸ“Ÿ

Our β€œshout” on Monday was to the aid of a broken down 10.5 metre fishing vessel with three people on board. The casualty vessel was 7.3 nautical miles from our launch site, east of Filey Bay. Our Atlantic 85 Lifeboat towed the vessel for a duration of around 2 hours and 20 minutes to the safety of Scarborough Harbour before returning to station.

Pictured is the navigation screen displaying casualty position and route to follow.
All of our boat crew train regularly in the use of electronic navigation equipment, alongside other means, so that we can locate and assist casualties as quickly and safely as possible, whatever the conditions.

Yesterday evening we had a visit from our Coastal Lifeboat Trainer.
One of our crew members, Kian, is currently working towards becoming a Navigator on both the Atlantic 85 and the D Class, so it was a great opportunity for a mock pass-out - he did brilliantly!

Thanks to the Filey Sea Cadets & Royal Marines Cadets member who sent us this video of the crew on their exercise 🌊

Heading to the coast this Bank Holiday weekend?
Remember that while the weather may be warming up, sea temperatures remain very cold.

If you find yourself in difficulty in the water, FLOAT TO LIVE:

- Lay on your back with your ears submerged
- Move your arms and legs to stay afloat
- Control your breathing
- Call for help or swim to safety

πŸ“ž In an emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

If you spot someone else in difficulty in the water, call for help and give the person in trouble the above instructions.

If you’re heading out for a coastal walk, remember to check the tide times before heading out to avoid being cut off.

🚨 BREAKING: RUTH LEE GOES WALKABOUT 🚨

Some of you may have already seen the news that Whitby RNLI lifeboat training mannequin, Ruth Lee, completed a solo coastal adventure with tourist stops at each lifeboat station from Scarborough Lifeboat Station to RNLI Bridlington Lifeboats.

Ruth Lee has achieved most of her β€œbucket list” goals in impressive time:
βœ… Get rescued
βœ… Tour the Yorkshire coast
❎ Avoid being put back in the training store

It’s fair to say that Ruth Lee is an expert in although she doesn’t hold the record for greatest distance travelled by a lifeboat training mannequin, yet…
Maybe she’ll get lucky with avoiding being put back in the training store after her next adventure.

For now though, here are a couple of pictures from her visit to Filey, where she was made very welcome before heading to Flamborough Lifeboat Station (sadly, missing their cake sale day this time!), Bridlington for a cuppa and finally, back home to Whitby.
