🕰️ A look back in time 🕰️

📜 A decade ago this month, one of our helms, Paul Wilson, was presented with a personal bravery award following the rescue of a teenager who had fallen from a cliff.
A second award was presented to crews on both the D Class and Mersey Lifeboats collectively. The full story is in the post below.

🌊 Training and service continues at Filey to help those in difficulty along our stretch of coast, as it has done for over 200 hundred years!

We are proud to have some incredibly experienced, knowledgeable and competent crew who are also supportive trainers for newer crew members, both afloat and ashore.

🔶 Crew milestone! 🔶

🧭 Crew member, Kian, completed his Atlantic 85 and D Class Navigation pass out last week.

🗺️ The pass out consists of a written exam covering IRPCS, kit limitations and chart work, followed by practical assessment in the understanding and safe use of RADAR, SIMS electronic chart system, AIS, Direction Finder, position fixing and all other navigational and lookout tools and techniques available to us. This incorporates route plotting and high-speed search scenarios, maintaining the safety of the crew and boat at all times whilst responding to a casualty as quickly as possible.

Well done, Kian, we are so proud of you! 💙

🌊 Crew members Caitlin and Jem took a trip to the training college in Poole last week for a Crew Emergency Procedures course.

🛟 The two day course covered sea survival, capsize drills for both the D Class and Atlantic 85 lifeboats and pyrotechnics.

🌊 It’s safe to say that they had a brilliant time with crew from other stations across the RNLI. The generous donations of our supporters enables us to continue sending crew on valuable training so that they are best equipped to carry out their life-saving duties in their local communities.

The RNLI is a charity that exists to save lives at sea. But recent events have generated deliberate misinformation and a misunderstanding about our purpose and our lifesaving work in the Channel.

As a result, some of our volunteers and staff have been the subject of online and, in some cases, physical abuse. This is unacceptable.

The RNLI’s people represent the very best of society. For over two hundred years they have dedicated themselves to rescuing people they’ve never met before, without judgment, fear or favour.

We are tasked by HM Coastguard to help those in distress, and we'll do so whenever, wherever and whoever they are.

We launched 9,058 times in 2025. Only 109 of those launches were to those in distress in the Channel – 1.2% of our total rescue work. Anyone rescued from a small boat by the RNLI is then taken into the care of the relevant UK authorities.

To those who stand with the RNLI, thank you. For more than two hundred years, we've saved lives at sea around the UK and Ireland, and that commitment remains unchanged.

🔧 Yesterday we welcomed back our Talus after she had some time away for maintenance.

🔩 A few interesting facts about her:

⚙️ Specially designed for the RNLI for launch and recovery of carriage-mounted lifeboats
⚙️ Atlantic 85 launch vehicle at Filey, previously used to launch our Mersey
⚙️ Weight: 19 tonne (the ground shakes when she moves!)
⚙️ Propulsion: tracks
⚙️ Amphibious - she can survive being fully submerged, so long as the hatches are closed!

💙 She is very well looked after by our brilliant shore crew on station; regular maintenance and full wash-down after every launch keeps her in the best condition possible so that we can continue to launch on training and on service 🚨
