Volunteers and staff from the RNLI and other organisations throughout the region joined one another for a Women in Search and Rescue conference on Saturday in Bridlington.

Throughout the day there were discussions and workshops on topics that affect women in all roles in lifesaving services, from health to managing difficult conversations. The event was open to all and was a great opportunity to connect with others.

Our own crew member, Meg, organised the event alongside the RNLI Bridlington Lifeboats events team, inspired by the brilliant Women in SAR event she attended at RNLI Fishguard Lifeboat last year.

Remember, if you find yourself in difficulty in the water:

- Tilt your head back with ears submerged
- Relax and try to breathe normally
- Move your hands and legs to stay afloat
- It’s okay if your legs sink, we all float differently

Two of our crew members, Scott and Meg, are at the RNLI College in Poole this week for four days of Seamanship training on the Atlantic 85 Lifeboat.

Throughout the week they are developing their skills in anchoring, veering, towing, boat handling (helming), mooring and berthing, navigation, searching and how to assist different types of casualties. The training includes focussed sessions on each skill as well as running through scenarios as though they are real-life call outs, from the point of being tasked, to locating and assisting various dummy casualties hidden around Poole harbour.

As always, the standard of training at the college is excellent and both Scott and Meg are enjoying the opportunity to learn!

📟 The arrival of hot weather meant that the crew at Filey had a busy bank holiday weekend, with three incidents across three days and both boats being launched on service. 📟

Our “shout” on Monday was to the aid of a broken down 10.5 metre fishing vessel with three people on board. The casualty vessel was 7.3 nautical miles from our launch site, east of Filey Bay. Our Atlantic 85 Lifeboat towed the vessel for a duration of around 2 hours and 20 minutes to the safety of Scarborough Harbour before returning to station.

All of our boat crew train regularly in the use of electronic navigation equipment, alongside other means, so that we can locate and assist casualties as quickly and safely as possible, whatever the conditions.

Yesterday evening we had a visit from our Coastal Lifeboat Trainer.
One of our crew members, Kian, is currently working towards becoming a Navigator on both the Atlantic 85 and the D Class, so it was a great opportunity for a mock pass-out - he did brilliantly!
