229 takes to the skies!

We were very fortunate to send 4 cadets flying in our training aircraft, the Grob Tutor

Each cadet got around 40 minutes of Air Experienced Flying. In that time, they did aerobatics, flew over stone henge and took control of the aircraft!

Flying is a fundamental part of the Air Cadets, an opportunity that is unique.

Many congratulations to Farnham Town F.C. for their victory today ! Air Cadets in Farnham also like a game !

This Saturday, 229 Farnham supported the 36th Annual Duck Race in Gostery Meadows.

Alongside interacting with members of the public and talking to potential recruits, the cadets were tasked with transporting the ducks from the finish line to the start. Not only this, but they were honoured to start many of the races by tipping the ducks into the river!

As per tradition, the cadets also got a photo with duck number 229!

A special shout out should go to all the lovely vendors that took care of our cadets by providing free snow cones throughout the day and pizza! The cadets were very greatful for these.

What a quacking event! 🦆

On the 8th February, celebrating our 85th Anniversary, four 229 Cadets participated in a church service at St Clement Danes church.

They were treated to performances from the RAFAC band and choir along with inspiring speeches from a variety of people.

If you ever visit, look out for the 229 Squadron Crest on the floor, made from Welsh Slate!.

Last night our cadets marked the 85th Anniversary of the Air Training Corps with a parade in front of parents and families. We were honoured to be joined by a very special guest with a long and proud connection to both the Squadron and the RAF.

Dennis Poulter first joined 229 Squadron in 1947, later serving in the RAF as a navigator. He spoke to the cadets about his experiences, the opportunities the organisation gave him, and the skills and character it helped him build. Although he never achieved his dream of becoming a pilot during his RAF career, Dennis finally earned his wings in his 70s — a brilliant reminder that determination has no age limit.

We also enrolled our latest intake, Jupiter ’25, who have been working hard through their Second and First Class training, and we were delighted to award a Blue Wings badge.

We are incredibly fortunate to have living links to the very earliest days of this Squadron. Thank you to all cadets and parents who joined us for such a special evening.

January Round‑Up
January has been a busy and brilliant month for the cadets of 229 (Farnham) Squadron.

A huge well done to everyone who has earned achievements this month, including:
• First Class Cadet
• Essential First Aid
• Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
• Method of Instruction qualification

We also had 10 cadets representing the Squadron at the Wing Cross Country Competition, with two securing podium places — a fantastic result and a real credit to the team’s effort and determination.

We’re incredibly proud of all our cadets and look forward to seeing how they get on at the Region Competition later in February.

Recognise a familiar face!

A 229 Farnham Cadet being the face of Surrey Wings celebratory post about our 85th Anniversary!

Today marks the 85th Anniversary of the formation of the Air Training Corps.

Created out of the Air Defence Cadet Corps, the ATC was initially formed in the second world war for teenage boys to learn skills that supplied better-trained and experienced RAF recruits, many becoming aircrew. Now the ATC is open to young men and women, with a focus on creating good citizens and leaders for all walks of life.

The subjects covered have changed a lot in 85 years, morse code has gone and been replaced with cyber; but many still stay the same especially around flying and gliding.

If you were a cadet in Surrey Wing, or are a current cadet or volunteer - please share your greatest memories of being a cadet.
