Let us know if you find any ear muffs!

UPDATE - Happy April Fool's! Sorry, we couldn't resist! These are magnolia flower sepals - which is the green bit around the flower - and not bat ear muffs. Did we trick you? 👀

As the weather gets warmer, brown long-eared bats will start shedding their ear muffs which protects their fragile ears from the cold during hibernation.

If you find these on the floor in your local area, you are in luck - brown long-eared bats are around! 🥰

Meet Benedict Cumberbat🦇

Our first admission of the year came in the form of this beautiful brown long-eared bat!

He arrived with us on January 1st after being found in a bird box. Thankfully, other than being cold and low on weight, no injuries could be found. We plan to keep him a couple more days, to gain strength, before we then release him back where he was found.

As Benedict is displaying in this photo, brown long-eared bats are aptly named. These large ears give them exceptional hearing and allow them to detect even the smallest of insects. They often hunt by flying slowly amongst foliage using echolocation to detect prey. Their large ears allow them to precisely pinpoint insects on leaves and bark, picking them off as they go!
