Meet Alison and her cousin Michele & niece Jessica, who all have mitochondrial disease.

Like her mum, Alison was diagnosed with a hearing impairment at around 5 years old, and struggled with her balance and coordination. It was only in 2014, in her 40s, that Alison was finally diagnosed with the MELAS variant of mito, as were many of her family members.

Alison uses her mission to raise vital awareness of mitochondrial disease, and brought her cousin & niece to our annual Mito Meet Up in 2025, where they could connect with others impacted, attend workshops, and much more πŸ’š

Our first ever Mito Community Day in Glasgow...

With people from the mito community and some of the top mitochondrial researchers travelling from all over to attend, we were thrilled to see information being shared, people meeting for the first time, and the sense of community in the room. πŸ’š

We all have the same goals - to find treatments and a cure for mitochondrial disease, and power awareness & support for those affected. Events like these are where we can hear from everyone working to make that happen, and understand different perspectives on how we'll get there.

Thank you to all involved - we're so glad to be able to organise these kinds of events, and we couldn't do it without you! πŸ”¬βš‘

Thank you to our missionee Danielle for these photos.

Did you know that we offer FREE medical alert wristbands for those with mitochondrial disease in the UK? ⚑

Steph and Mel both find the bands to be a reassurance for themselves and their kids, and convenient for medical appointments. The QR code on the bands links to official NHS mito guidelines, and the text can be personalised with your own medical conditions and needs!

You can order your own free medical alert wristband now (UK only) here: https://www.mymitomission.uk/medical-alert-wristbands/
