Runnymede Drama Group Presents Way To Heaven (Himmelweg) at Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre in July

Runnymede Drama Group (RDG) will present the powerful and timely production Way To Heaven (Himmelweg) from 22-25 July at the Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre in Walton.

Written by award-winning Spanish playwright, mathematician and philosopher Juan Mayorga, Way To Heaven is inspired by a visit by the Red Cross to Theresienstadt concentration camp (Terezin) in 1944. Through a compelling play within a play, Mayorga shows how historical trauma echoes and resonates across the centuries.

This is the story of the Holocaust. But it is not just then, not just them.

In an increasingly dangerous world, where truth is under constant attack, this play speaks to the fragility of human beings in the face of violence and oppression, and to our common humanity when people seek to demonise the "other".

Juan Mayorga is best known in English-speaking countries for Himmelweg, which was brought to the London stage in June 2017 as part of the Festival of Spanish Theatre in London (Festelón).

The production features the acclaimed translation by David Johnston, Professor of Hispanic Studies at Queen's University Belfast and former Chair of the Lyric Theatre. Johnston is a multi-award winning translator whose work has been performed throughout the world, including translations of Lorca's Blood Wedding, Lope de Vega's The Gentlemen from Olmedo, Valle-Inclan's Bohemian Lights and Calderon's The Painter of Dishonour.

Performance Details: Way To Heaven (Himmelweg) 22-25 July 2026 Riverhouse Barn Arts Centre, Walton
