The story of Moses in the Bible offers hope. Here was a man running from his past. Raised as a prince of Egypt, but aware that his true origins were Israelite, he sees an Egyptian mistreating an Israelite and kills him in anger. In panic, Moses goes on the run, ending up as a shepherd in the desert, far from Egypt. He lost so much. Failure and doubt must have haunted him.

But one day everything changed. Moses was tending his flock when God speaks to him from a burning bush. This encounter changed Moses and gave him purpose and meaning.

At first, Moses couldn’t believe that God would choose him and have a plan for him. When he heard he was to go and tell Pharaoh to set God’s people free, he was troubled and full of doubt. It meant facing his past and the fears that held him back. So he made excuses, saying he was a poor speaker and lacked confidence.

God gave him all he needed, saying he would give him the words to say and strengthen him. And he did.

The story of Moses shows that true hope is found not in circumstances or possessions, but in the presence of God. Meeting God changed Moses, gave him a fire inside, and a life of purpose that sustained him throughout his life.

God can do the same for you. He says: “I will never leave you or forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5) – a promise as reliable today as it was for Moses. You could pray: “Dear Lord, please help me know your presence with me, like Moses. Strengthen and help me. Amen.”

It’s the stuff movies are made of: a criminal becoming friends with the very judge who sentenced him – and joining together to help others.

Well that’s the reality for once prolific offender, Tony Attwood. Tony spent 15 years in a cycle of addiction with over 400 arrests, 80 charges and 50 convictions for drug and alcohol related offences. Yet, after release, Tony has founded a housing charity for fellow ex-addicts in Reading... with the help of the judge as chairman of the trustees!

His Honour Judge Peter Ross, who sent Tony to prison back in 2015, admits: “Tony’s offending was underpinned by drug and alcohol addiction but was too serious to be dealt with by way of a community sentence. Unfortunately, he reoffended within weeks of his release and by pure chance appeared before me again having spent some months on remand.

“By this time much had changed: he had found a firm Christian faith and an equally firm determination to address his addictions, demonstrated by convincing a residential rehabilitation unit not only to accept him but to waive their fees.

“I decided to take a chance and passed a sentence requiring him to be treated there. He did brilliantly, and towards the end of his sentence he approached me to ask for my help in starting Hope and Vision Communities. The charity is very much his brainchild.”

It's a massive irony of recovery from trauma, that we repeat upon ourselves an echo of some of the horrors we've experienced in earlier life. But this, too, makes sense, if we know how to look at it. It is, after all, often all we've known. And so we need new experiences in relationship with new people to build new grooves for how to be in relationship with ourselves.
