We got creative this week at the Menopause Cafe. After talking about how our moods can change before or during the menopause, we made our own mood jars!

Our Menopause Cafes are a safe place for people with learning disabilities to meet and learn all about the menopause. Thank you to Creative Minds Minds for making these cafes possible!

Kirklees Involvement Network recently worked with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to host an engagement event in Kirklees, helping to explore what good engagement should look and feel like for people with learning disabilities. KIN members also joined a wider event alongside Calderdale Self Advocacy Network (CSAN), bringing together experiences from across both areas. And who better to tell us than the experts themselves?

The sessions were relaxed, fun and interactive, with plenty of opportunities for people to talk, laugh and share their experiences. Participants explored what works, what doesn't, and what organisations can do to ensure people with learning disabilities feel welcome, included, listened to and valued.

Together, they created their own Golden Rules for Engagement, which will help WYCA develop practical 'how to' guides for successfully engaging with people with learning disabilities.

The events were enjoyable and a great reminder that good engagement starts with listening to people with lived experience. A huge thank you to all the KIN members who took part and helped make the sessions such a success.

Earlier this month, we met with West Yorkshire Combined Authority to develop some golden rules when involving people with a learning disability.

What a great way of using our self advocacy skills to work with organisations to make positive changes for the benefit of everyone!

With another heatwave, it's important we know how to stay safe in hot weather!

The government has released some Easy Read information on how to beat the heat, including:

🔆 How to protect yourself from the sun - for example, by staying in the shade and wearing a hat and sunscreen.

🧊 How to cool down if you're feeling too hot - for example, by having cold drinks and closing any windows that are facing the sun.

❓ Which people are at a higher risk of becoming ill in the hot weather.

⚠️ How to spot signs of heatstroke.

In July, the LeDeR programme released its 2024 report about the lives and deaths of people with learning disabilities and autistic people.

The report showed that people with learning disabilities are more likely to die from treatable conditions than the general population. Many of these conditions can often be prevented or better managed through regular health checks, timely access to healthcare and the right health education.

We had a great time at our Menopause Cafe on Wednesday. We learned about how the menopause can affect our mood, learned about complementary treatments, and tried teas and mocktails that help us to sleep! We also did some colouring sheets about the menopause.

Come along to our Menopause Cafe at the Huddersfield Mission tomorrow at 12.30pm.

Come and enjoy learning about the treatments that can aid comfort and sleep. Try calming teas and drinks, and have a hand massage! We also have crafts and colouring.
