It's Invisible Disabilities Week!

Sometimes, if someone's needs aren't easy to see, it can be more difficult for them to get the recognition, understanding and support they need. At KIN, we believe everyone has the right to be heard, understood and included. By getting involved, you can:

Today is World Mental Health Day 💚

It’s an important reminder that our mental health matters just as much as our physical health, and that everyone deserves to feel heard, understood and supported.

This year’s theme is being heard, something that is at the heart of the Kirklees Involvement Network (KIN).

For people with learning disabilities, having opportunities to speak up, share experiences and have a say in the things that matter to them is so important.

Today, and every day, we can all play our part:

💬 Take the time to listen.
🧠 Talk openly about mental health.
🤝 Make space for different voices and experiences.
💚 Make inclusion the norm, not the exception.

Everyone deserves to have their voice heard.

Learning Disability England are working with the Race Equality Foundation and Macmillan Cancer Support to try and make cancer care fairer for people with learning disabilities from Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities.

They are setting up a Project Working Group to help shape this project, and are looking for people who:

👉 Have a learning disability, are from a Black, Asian or minoritised ethnic background, and have had experience of cancer (for example, have attended a screening or have a diagnosis of cancer)
👉 Care for someone who fits the above description

We're getting ready for the Race for Inclusion on 6 November at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust

Representing Team Purple are Kirklees Involvement Network, Lead the Way , Calderdale Self Advocacy Network and Cloverleaf Advocacy as we go head-to-head with team orange: Project Search Calderdale Calderdale College Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Charity

We got creative this week at the Menopause Cafe. After talking about how our moods can change before or during the menopause, we made our own mood jars!

Our Menopause Cafes are a safe place for people with learning disabilities to meet and learn all about the menopause. Thank you to Creative Minds Minds for making these cafes possible!

Kirklees Involvement Network recently worked with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to host an engagement event in Kirklees, helping to explore what good engagement should look and feel like for people with learning disabilities. KIN members also joined a wider event alongside Calderdale Self Advocacy Network (CSAN), bringing together experiences from across both areas. And who better to tell us than the experts themselves?

The sessions were relaxed, fun and interactive, with plenty of opportunities for people to talk, laugh and share their experiences. Participants explored what works, what doesn't, and what organisations can do to ensure people with learning disabilities feel welcome, included, listened to and valued.

Together, they created their own Golden Rules for Engagement, which will help WYCA develop practical 'how to' guides for successfully engaging with people with learning disabilities.

The events were enjoyable and a great reminder that good engagement starts with listening to people with lived experience. A huge thank you to all the KIN members who took part and helped make the sessions such a success.

Earlier this month, we met with West Yorkshire Combined Authority to develop some golden rules when involving people with a learning disability.

What a great way of using our self advocacy skills to work with organisations to make positive changes for the benefit of everyone!
