End of an era for Dewsbury Market 🥲

As most people know, Dewsbury Market will soon close to allow a major renovation project to begin.

Today, we wanted to highlight that Dewsbury Market has been much more than just a place to buy and sell goods. For many years, it has also provided a place of refuge for people experiencing homelessness, including those who have suddenly found themselves without a bed for the night due to a family breakdown, relationship issues, or other crises.

For over a decade, Dewsbury Cares has worked with people sleeping in and around the market. The video shows some of the places people have sheltered over the years. Thankfully, nobody is sleeping in these locations at the moment, as we have worked alongside Housing Solutions to help secure accommodation for them.

Not everyone is able to access accommodation immediately, but Dewsbury Cares takes the time to build relationships, listen to people's stories, and understand the circumstances that have led them to sleep rough. Through this work, friendships are formed, and many people continue to visit our unit even after being housed, as they may still need support with managing their tenancy, finances, or day-to-day challenges 🥰

While we understand the reasons behind the market's redevelopment, we are concerned about where people will find shelter when they have nowhere else to go. The market was never warm or comfortable, but it did provide some protection from the elements.

If you come across someone who is homeless and needs help, they should present to Housing Solutions, based at Dewsbury Library. Outside of office hours, they should contact the emergency out-of-hours service on 📞 01484 414933

Dewsbury Cares volunteers will continue to advocate for people wherever possible, as many struggle to have their voices heard. We are grateful that we now have a fantastic working relationship with Housing Solutions, allowing us to work together to support some of the most vulnerable members of our community ❤️

In the 80s, we'd listen to music and dream about the future.

We'd put on a cassette, stretch out on the bed, and imagine the lives we were going to have someday. Bigger houses. Better cars. More money. More adventures. Freedom. The future felt wide open, and every song seemed to be pushing us toward it.

A Journey song could make you believe anything was possible.

A Bon Jovi anthem made you feel invincible.

When Def Leppard, Van Halen, or REO Speedwagon came blasting through the speakers, you weren't thinking about getting older. You were thinking about everything that was still ahead of you.

Back then, 80s music was tied to our dreams.

Now it's tied to our memories.

And maybe that's because the music wasn't just better. (It was.) But because it was attached to a time when life felt different.

When MTV actually played music.

When you sat by the radio waiting for your favorite song so you could hit RECORD the second it came on.

When bedrooms were covered in posters of Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins, Bryan Adams, and countless others who helped define our generation.

These artists weren't just entertainers.

They were there for our first dates, first heartbreaks, first cars, Friday night football games, summer jobs, long drives, and dreams that seemed limitless.

Those songs became the soundtrack to the years we now look back on with such affection.

That's why an 80s song can still stop us in our tracks today....For a few minutes, we're reminded of a time when our biggest dreams were still in front of us, our closest friends were never far away, and the world felt full of possibilities.

We used to listen to music and dream about how great our future would be.

Now we listen to that same music and remember how great that part of our lives really was ❤️

A very busy but productive Friday. Lots of hungry people who all went away satisfied 🥰

Some people still might think we only feed those who are homeless - we don’t! If you, or someone you know, has fallen on hard times and need something to eat, you/they can always come to us ❤️

Tonight we had lovely food donated by Farhana who brought a chicken and butter bean stew, bread and chocolate milk.

Kirklees College donated sandwiches and their students passed on their sweet treats.

Granthams Family Bakers donated pasties and bread.

Aamir brought a box of soreen loaves.

We are so grateful for the continued support of our loc community 💕👏⭐️😍
