Derwent Hall

Derwent Hall Focusing on the health &
welfare of Darwen’s ‘over 50’ community, with friendship, fun & good food thrown in the mix! We’re a friendly, helpful bunch!

Derwent Hall has been around for decades offering warmth, space and most importantly, time, to thousands of Darwen residents. It has become better known over the years for the facilities it offers to the more ‘seasoned’ amongst us. It was registered as a charity under its official title ‘Darwen Old Peoples' Welfare Association’ in 1947 so has served Darwen and surrounding areas including Tockholes

, Edgworth, Hoddlesden, Tockholes, Pickup Bank and Lower Darwen for over 7 decades. It can be found on the bottom of George Street, in one of the few flat areas of the town, which if you know Darwen is a rarity and a real advantage! Loneliness and feelings of isolation can be an issue for many people as they enter their twilight years and maintaining a social life, making new friends and staying active is key to a happy and healthier lifestyle. Supported by the caring staff, the committee, the amazing team of volunteers and the people of Darwen, without whom we would not have been able to continue, Derwent Hall’s goal is to encourage Darwen’s over 50 community to continue to ‘live and thrive’ as they enter the golden years. We are passionate about the welfare of our older citizens and offer 2 course meals, currently £4, each weekday at 12 noon prompt for the over 50s. Arrive at Derwent Hall between 11.30 and 11.45 on any weekday and you will find people arriving in droves. We also have a volunteer run, pop in cafe. Here you will find a very warm welcome, a cuppa & a snack. All cakes, pies & biscuits are baked by our catering team. It is currently open on a Monday & Wednesday 10am – 2 pm. We are planning on a Friday opening too and will be seeking volunteers to enable us to do so. Derwent Hall is a place where new friendships are formed and old friendships rekindled. It’s a place to socialise, join one or more of the community groups, work the brain cells in the quiz, have a dance, play bingo, join the craft group or the Darby and Joan Club. Outings are also arranged by the various groups. We also hold occasional meetings where help and advice is given regarding medical issues or new government legislation. Please check into our page regularly as different events are held on a regular basis and you may just find something that you would love to be involved in.

❗️Important Lunch Club Update

Please note that there will be no Lunch Club on Thursday 18th June due to essential maintenance work being carried out in our kitchen.

We know how much our Thursday gatherings mean to so many of our members, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. The work is necessary to help us keep our facilities running smoothly for everyone who visits us.

The good news is that we will be back open as normal for lunch every other week day next week, and we look forward to welcoming you for a delicious lunch, friendly faces, and a good chat.

At Derwent Hall, we’re much more than just a lunch club. We are here to provide companionship, friendship, support, and a warm welcome for older people in our community. Whether it’s enjoying a freshly cooked meal, taking part in activities, meeting new friends, or simply having somewhere to go where you’re known and valued, our aim is to help reduce loneliness and keep people connected.

For many of our members, our lunch clubs are an important part of the week, a chance to socialise, laugh, share stories, and enjoy being part of a caring community.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support. We can’t wait to see you all again next week.

We’re World Cup ready here at Derwent Hall!
Our fabulous and creative carer, Michelle, has been working hard alongside our Day Care Members to create a fantastic World Cup display. Together they have designed and decorated a wall featuring teams from around the world, colourful flags, and plenty of England football emblems.
The hall is looking great, and we’re all set to enjoy the excitement of the tournament together. Well done to everyone involved - and come on England! 🏆

💜 National Carers Week 💜

This week, we would like to take a moment to recognise and celebrate the incredible carers who make such a difference every single day.

At Derwent Hall, we are fortunate to have a team of dedicated, compassionate and hardworking carers and volunteers whose kindness, patience and understanding help support the wellbeing, dignity and independence of those who use our services. Their commitment often goes far beyond what is expected, and we are immensely grateful for everything they do.

We also want to acknowledge the millions of unpaid carers across the country - husbands, wives, sons, daughters, relatives, friends and neighbours who provide care and support to loved ones, often quietly and without recognition. Your love, devotion and selflessness make an immeasurable difference, and your contribution to our communities cannot be overstated.

Whether you are a professional carer or caring for someone you love, thank you for the compassion, strength and dedication you show every day.

From all of us at Derwent Hall, we appreciate you.

The World Cup Is Nearly Here!

With the football fever starting next week, some of us are feeling a little nostalgic (perhaps a bit hopeful too) here at Derwent Hall.

If you were around then, do you remember where you were when England won the World Cup in 1966?

Were you watching at home (in black and white)? In the pub? Listening on the radio?

We’d love to hear your memories when you join us for lunch this week.

If football isn’t your thing, roses are blooming, the days are longer and our kitchen is serving up some comforting favourites! You’ll always find good food, friendly company and a warm welcome at Derwent Hall.

Why not join us for lunch and a chat or come along to one of our afternoon clubs that currently run from Monday - Wednesday?

The lunches, for Darwen’s over 50 community, are served at 12 noon prompt each weekday (excluding Bank Holidays).
Cost is £5 (cash only) for each two course meal.

If you have any dietary requirements, please ring 01254 702259 to discuss.

Since 1947, Derwent Hall has proudly supported older people across Darwen and the surrounding areas as a local charity at the heart of our community.

But did you know that we have also been operating our adjoining Day Care Centre since 1998?

We understand that considering any form of care can be an emotional and difficult decision for individuals and their families. Our Day Care Centre offers a reassuring middle ground, providing support, companionship and meaningful activities while helping people maintain their independence and remain connected to their community.

Our small, friendly setting allows us to provide a relaxed and personalised service, delivered by a team of highly experienced and compassionate staff who put their heart and soul into everything they do. From home-cooked meals and gentle activities to social connection, friendship and person centered support, we are committed to providing the highest quality of care in a warm, safe and welcoming environment.

If you would like to find out more about our Day Care Centre, we would be delighted to welcome you for a visit and show you what we do.

To discuss a placement and/or other available services please contact 01254 585949 or visit https://www.blackburn.gov.uk/adult-social-care

**More Than Just a Lunch Club**

At Derwent Hall, we know that a good meal is important, but for many of our members, it’s the friendship, laughter and sense of belonging that matter just as much.

Every week day, people come together to enjoy a freshly prepared lunch, meet old friends, make new ones and spend time in a warm, welcoming environment. For many older people, especially those living alone, these opportunities for social connection can make a real difference to their wellbeing and quality of life.

We were touched by some of the lovely comments we received recently:

“The elderly of Darwen rely on Derwent Hall for company as well as lovely food.”

“We also enjoy the lovely food at Derwent Hall. We go with friends & relations but we’ve now met lots of new people and enjoy the company and lots of laughs.”

As a local charity, our work goes far beyond providing meals. We help reduce loneliness and isolation, encourage friendships, support independence and create a place where everyone feels valued and included.

Whether you join us for lunch, activities, events or simply a friendly chat, you’ll always find a warm welcome at Derwent Hall.

Thank you to everyone who supports our charity and helps us continue serving the older people of Darwen and the surrounding community.

The lunches, for Darwen’s over 50 community, are served at 12 noon prompt each weekday (excluding Bank Holidays).
