Redbay Lifeboat

Redbay Lifeboat RNLI Red Bay The RNLI officially established a lifeboat station at Red Bay on 26th August 1972.

In July 2010 a new Atlantic 85 lifeboat arrived at Red Bay and, after a period of intensive crew training, was placed on station on 29 July. The
new boat, number B-843 was funded by a gift from Mr and Mrs Colmer (England), and was named Geoffrey Charles after the donorsโ€™ son. This boat replaced B-728 Dorothy Mary, which had served the station for almost fourteen years, during which time she was launched 187 times and rescued 227 people.

Good Water Safety adviceโ€ฆ...

Float to Live could save your life.

Remember:
- Tilt your head back with ears submerged
- Relax and try to control your breathing
- Use your hands to help you stay afloat
- It's okay if your legs sink, we all float differently

Practice these steps at a supervised location, like a swimming pool or lifeguarded beach so you know what to do in an emergency.

Red Bay RNLI came to the aid of a lone sailor in challenging weather conditions yesterday evening (Monday 18 May) after their 10m yacht got into difficulty off the Scottish coast.

The volunteer crew launched their all-weather lifeboat at 6.05pm following a request by Belfast Coastguard. The sailor was on passage from Scotland to Belfast at the time.

Weather conditions at the time were challenging with south easterly winds of 28 knots and rough seas.

The yacht was located approximately 16 miles east of Cushendall, where arriving on scene, the lifeboat crew assessed the situation before transferring a crew member to the yacht to assist the sailor, a task that proved challenging in the conditions. With the crew member safely onboard and able to render assistance, the yacht was able to sail to Glenarm, where it was then towed safely into Glenarm Marina by the lifeboat and moored with the assistance of Larne Coastguard.

The lifeboat crew returned safely to Cushendall at 11.30pm. Speaking following the call out, Paddy McLaughlin, Red Bay RNLI Coxswain said: โ€˜Conditions this evening made this a demanding operation for all involved and we want to thank both Belfast Coastguard and Larne Coastguard for their assistance throughout and wish the sailor well.

โ€˜As we prepare for summer, we would encourage anyone planning a trip to sea to go prepared. Always wear a lifejacket or suitable flotation device for your activity, always carry a fully charged means of communication and always let someone know where you are going and when you are due back. Should you get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.โ€™

From all of us at RNLI Red Bay, we extend our heartfelt condolences to our fellow search and rescue colleagues at Marine Rescue NSW, following the tragic incident in Ballina, Australia.

The loss of their two volunteers is felt on a global scale and is a sobering reminder of the immense danger search and rescue volunteers face every day at sea. We recognise the profound impact tragedies like this have on families, crews and communities. Our thoughts are with them all.

We honour the courage, commitment and selflessness of those involved, and of everyone who dedicates their lives to saving lives at sea. They will not be forgotten. Fair winds and following seas ๐Ÿ’™

Red Bay RNLI Lifeboat crew were requested to launch today, Monday 4th May, at 13:51 by Belfast Coastguard after a lady had taken a bad fall, dislocating her knee near Rathlin Island harbour and requiring transfer to hospital. The lifeboat crew, with assistance from the Rathlin Coastguard team, which had earlier administered first aid to the injured person, transferred the lady to the lifeboat. The lady was then transferred to Ballycastle aboard their All-Weather Lifeboat and into the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, with assistance from the Ballycastle Coastguard team.
