Riversmeet

Riversmeet Riversmeet is working towards a vision of a more creative, cooperative and sustainable society in Cockermouth and beyond.

Riversmeet is a community cooperative of local people working to secure the future environment, social and economic well-being of the community of Cockermouth and its rural catchment area. Riversmeet is working for a more cooperative, creative and sustainable society, by supporting personal and collective initiative. Our mission is to develop the capability of local citizens to sustain the well-bei

ng of our community and therefore our planet through collective action and community enterprise. Riversmeet run a range of projects including local food growing, energy saving in the home, reuse of waste materials and practical conservation. We believe that many solutions to global problems can be delivered by local communities and that creating new ways of living and working, within the limits of the Earth's resources, is the responsibility of local people. By bringing people together to invest personal energy in assuring the viability and well-being of their local neighbourhoods we will optimise local capability and be a catalyst to civic renewal and community sustainability. The content of this site is created and edited by local citizens and all those with an interest or involvement in our community, to help us all to share ideas, information and resources. As well as a growing network of active citizens, this includes local people who may have moved away, young people who may hope to return and people and communities with whom the town has cultural links. Everyone Can Do Something

Come and find out more at our monthly open meeting @ the Resource Centre on the 3rd Thursday of the Month 7:30 pm. Groundwork in Cumbria’s office is based upstairs and Riversmeet are working with Groundwork to deliver a range of projects. Riversmeet Community Resource, 4 Market Street, Cockermouth, CA13 9NJ

Coming to the end of a beautiful weekend of deepening connections (human and more than human), creativity and skills at Danaway. Yesterday we had our Wildlings meet for home educating families and we did some fire branding, braiding and tie dying as well as exploring the farm, noticing the seasonal changes (pine pollen!) and enjoying some wonderful conversations and play. Today it was the Wild Collective, our monthly group for age 11+ and they chose to do a whittling project - all went home with their own hand crafted fire steels. We also enjoyed sunshine and wild garlic wrap pizzas cooked on the fire as well as some wild meadow play to finish 💚 It brings a lot of joy to our staff and volunteers to be holding space for these sessions, deepening relationships, awareness and nature connection and building skills for the future as well as just having a lovely time. There is a lot of preparation and planning behind the scenes but the sessions themselves always feel like a deep breath out and a space to just be together in nature.

Take anything you need to be repaired (or volunteer to help out) to this fantastic Cockermouth initiative - regenerative skills in action! If you visited the Nature Festival this weekend, let the organisers know your thoughts. It was such a special weekend for us, so friendly, inspiring and informative and a real blessing to meet so many people with common interests working on amazing and ambitious projects. We spent the weekend connecting with people and had a stall with a range of invitations connecting visitors with each other and the world around them - making nature poems with pebbles, drawing and painting with tree inks, filling in our nature journal and exploring a range of nature treasures including some amazing bird nests, bones, stones and seeds. Check out our website and Eventbrite to see more of our events bringing people together to connect, share, learn skills and explore the natural world. All our events are supported by volunteers as we only have one part time staff member - huge thanks to Kirsty, Rick, Anja, Patrizia and Philippa for their help this weekend. If you would like to volunteer with us please contact [email protected]

Welcome to the Cumbria Nature Festival, where we bring together like-minded people to explore, share, and celebrate the incredible wildlife and environmental biodiversity of Cumbria. Join us for an unforgettable experience.

Our next volunteer day will be on Sunday 3rd May 12-4.

These days usually involve shared food, inspiring conversation and sharing of ideas, practical work on the farm and skills sharing. This coming weekend there will also be newborn lambs!

Our volunteers provide vital support for all the other events that we run at Danaway for families and young people - welcoming people and supervising activities, sharing skills and lending a helping hand. Our volunteer community days are a way for us to give something back - building relationships, connection and skills in our volunteer family.

If you'd like to come along and find out more or join in, please contact us at [email protected].
