The shows and events we attend to talk about Water Safety is our mission to try and help raise awareness and reduce drownings of both people and dogs.

We particularly enjoy seeing teenagers and young children learning about what we do, trying on equipment, and finding out about Water Safety

On Sunday we spoke to a very young man called Harrington, and it was clear to see he listened intensely, and he loved the throwlines. We gave him a pack of goodies to take away including colouring sheets.

He surprised us later in the day by bringing back a colouring sheet as a gift for us ❀️

It was a humbling and heart warming moment and we'll treasure it greatly.

Sadly we live in a world that we have chosen not to show the full picture of Harrington for his safety, but if he sees this we thankyou so very much, it was the highlight of our day ❀️

September is World Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, with World Su***de Prevention Day on the 10th.

Sadly with the work we do we have seen the impact that mental health and su***de has. The impact it has on families, friends, work colleagues, the community, emergency services, and teams like ours.

No matter how dark it may seem, please seek help. Please speak to family members, friends, or Mental Health Charities.

You are not alone. You matter more then you think to more people then you know

We often see people saying that winter clothing or dog coats will make a person or dog heavier and sink faster.

Here we have an orange in its peel (thick winter clothing) and a peeled orange (summer t-shirt and shorts)

When a person or dog enters water in a lot of clothing, that clothing traps air inside. While clothing may make it difficult to swim, that trapped air provides some buoyancy until the clothing becomes waterlogged.

While this may not be enough buoyancy to keep a person or dog fully afloat, it means they may move with the flow of the water until the clothing becomes fully waterlogged

Our Ruth Lee Ltd Rufus dog was very interested in this one, and wondered where his bone was going.

People and dogs are made up of a big cocktail of ingredients we call a body. Each of us is unique with a different make-up.

Let's consider muscle, body fat, and bone. Each has its own density. The percentage of each that our bodies are made up of makes a difference to our overall density, and in turn buoyancy.

Here we have a chicken breast (muscle) weighing 157 grams, bone weighing 157 grams, and lard (body fat) weighing 155 grams so all very similar weight.

Muscle is a lot denser then fat, so fat has more buoyancy.

A person or dog with higher percentage of muscle mass and low percentage of body fat will be denser, so will have less buoyancy.

A person or dog with higher fat percentage and less muscle mass will be less dense, so will have more buoyancy

The larger and heavier the object, the quicker it will sink right?

Here we have an egg weighing 63 grams, and an orange weighing 282 grams. The orange is much larger and heavier so will sink faster won't it?

The egg has a higher density then the orange, so the orange has more buoyancy

We often see people advising or asking questions on social media, particularly with missing dogs, about doing a "weight test", throwing an object or manikin of similar weight as a missing person or dog into water and see where it goes.

This is ineffective simply down to physics. Density, Water Displacement, and Buoyancy.

Here we have a rock weighing 81 grams, and a piece of wood weighing 80 grams. Very similar weights.

But the rock sinks, while the wood floats. This is because the rock has a far higher density

More demonstrations to come
