Incredible turnout today in Westminster - over 1000 school support staff from Merton and Greenwich demanding that their London Weighting Needs Inflating!

1000 school support staff will be marching on Westminster this Friday in their fight for London Weighting parity.

Some of these workers earn £1400 less than teacher colleagues each year in London Weighting allowance.

Maybe the government will start paying attention to them when they're on their doorstep?

As September draws to a close, we look back at this year’s East and South East Asian (ESEA) Heritage Month.

This year’s theme set by besea.n is "Evolving Threads”. It encourages us to reflect on what connects us across generations and countries and what we carry forward with us.

Those threads run through the history of the ESEA community in the UK. Chinese seafarers worked in the merchant ships, bringing food and essential goods to the UK through both World Wars.

Many were silently deported after 1945, leaving their families in a limbo until today. From the 1950s, many ESEA families took over empty takeaway shops and changed the food scene in the UK.

From the late 1970s, many Vietnamese families settled here. ESEA nurses and carers who started working in our NHS 50 years ago now actively support our healthcare and social care system.

There is a strong history of active ESEA contributions within our trade unions. ESEA workers have been campaigning for equal pay, safe staffing levels and respect at work.

Last year, a Filipino nurse Louie Horne is believed to be the first international nurse to represent nursing staff in one of the UK’s biggest trade unions.

Across various industries ranging from transport to healthcare and hospitality, ESEA members have made our trade unions and workplaces stronger.

Not just in September, we listen and stand together to celebrate ESEA Heritage in this country.
