The Teen Yoga Mental Health charity (formerly foundation), has worked tirelessly since 2016 to promote yoga based techniques for young people in all contexts: social, educational and medical. It started in 2003 with Charlotta Martinus who taught yoga in her hometown in Bath for several years to great success. The charity has benefitted from Sport England, European Union

and National Lottery funding. It has partnered with Leeds University, Westminster University, the BBC, Anna Freud Centre, Oxfam, NTNU, Salamanca University to research outcomes of educational and health benefits of yoga for young people. We run several courses every year online and face to face to train professionals and parents in bringing yoga to teens. Collaborations include, Youth Connect South West, Bath Young Carers, Bath University, Depaul, Mentor UK, lululemon, London Youth, College of Medicine. In parliament, we hold annual meetings with MPs and Lords in the House of Commons and Lords in London, on the impact of yoga for young people and in 2022 we created the Rational for Yoga in Schools, outlining the financial benefits of yoga for young people. This can be found on our website. We are a slimline, active charity whose mission is to bring joy and health to young people through yoga. We believe in the agency and creativity of young people to find their own health and path. We have 2000 graduates worldwide who advocate for Teen Yoga in over 20 countries. We have delivered courses in Johannesburg, South Africa and Sierra Leone as part of our outreach.

This month, as teens settle into new school routines, we share two yogic principles: Saucha and Tapas - two of the Niyamas (personal observances), the second limb of Patanjaliโ€™s Eight Limbs of Yoga. Practising these principles daily can help young people find steadiness during times of change:

Keeping things clear, simple, and uncluttered (inside and out). For teens this can look like creating supportive environments such as keeping study spaces organised, reducing distractions, choosing nourishing foods, and taking moments to clear the mind through breath, journaling, or mindful reflection.

Showing up with steady effort, even in small ways. Tapas reminds us that healthy routines are built through small, consistent actions such as waking around the same time each day, practising a few mindful breaths before class, or committing to a simple daily movement practice like a gentle yoga flow or a walk around the block.

Routines do not have to be rigid or about perfection to be helpful. Lasting change comes from showing up each day and making small choices that help life feel more manageable, especially during busy or changing seasons.

Clear the space, then build the habit.

When trust is built early, resilience grows naturally. Young people begin to feel more confident, more grounded, and more able to navigate the challenges they face โ€” both inside and outside your sessions.

If youโ€™re supporting teens in community, youth justice, mental health, or outreach settings, TeenYoga gives you practical tools to help them feel safe, empowered and ready to thrive.

September is Snackโ€‘tember โ€” a month dedicated to helping young people make smarter, steadier snack choices that support energy, mood, and mental wellbeing.

For teens, snacking isnโ€™t just about food. Itโ€™s about fuel โ€” for school, friendships, movement, and emotional balance. When blood sugar dips, concentration, patience, and motivation often dip with it. When we snack well, everything feels a little more manageable.

๐Ÿฅœ Nuts and seeds

๐Ÿฅ• Veg sticks and hummus

๐Ÿ’ง And yes โ€” hydration counts as a snack too

Healthy snacking helps stabilise mood, supports the nervous system, and keeps teens grounded through busy school days. Pairing this with gentle movement, breathwork, and mindful pauses creates a powerful wellbeing routine.

Letโ€™s make Snackโ€‘tember a reminder that small choices add up โ€” and that teens deserve food that helps them feel steady, strong, and ready for whatever the day brings.

As summer fades and a new school year begins, teens experience changes in many ways. Different teachers, new routines, some friendships dissolving and new ones forming, and fresh expectations all mark a season of transition.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, times of transition naturally increase movement in mind and body. When life feels busy and unpredictable, creating steady rhythms can help teens feel more grounded, focused, and supported

Yoga and Ayurveda remind us that we don't need to stop the movement, we can create steadiness within it. In Ayurveda, this practice of creating supportive daily rhythm is known as โ€œDinacharya.โ€ Daily routines, regular sleep and mealtimes, and practices that align with the body's natural circadian rhythms help young people feel steadier from the inside out.

Small moments of consistency can make a big difference as teens move through seasonal and life transitions with ease.

Nobody celebrates the panic attack that never happened. There are no headlines about the young person who quietly chose to ask for help before reaching crisis, or the classroom where a teacher helped students regulate their emotions before conflict escalated.

Prevention rarely makes the news because its impact is measured by what doesn't happen. Yet these quiet moments can alter the course of a young person's life.

At Teen Yoga, we believe that wellbeing is most powerful when it begins long before crisis. Teaching a teenager how to recognise stress, regulate their nervous system and build self-awareness doesn't just help them through the next exam or difficult conversation. It gives them skills they can draw upon throughout adulthood.

The ripple effect extends far beyond one individual. A calmer student contributes to a calmer classroom. A more resilient young person builds healthier relationships. An educator equipped with practical wellbeing tools can positively influence hundreds, if not thousands, of children over the course of a career.

Imagine what our schools, communities and future workplaces could look like if emotional regulation was valued as highly as literacy or numeracy. That isn't an impossible ambition - it starts with giving young people the tools to understand themselves before the world asks more of them. ๐ŸŒฟ

Sometimes the greatest impact isn't measured by the problems we solve, but by the problems that never have the chance to grow.

He describes the training as โ€œ๐—ฎ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ดโ€ thatโ€™s opened new windows for him:

โญShowing him how yoga, breathwork and movement can calm crisis moments.
