The Teen Yoga Mental Health charity (formerly foundation), has worked tirelessly since 2016 to promote yoga based techniques for young people in all contexts: social, educational and medical. It started in 2003 with Charlotta Martinus who taught yoga in her hometown in Bath for several years to great success. The charity has benefitted from Sport England, European Union

and National Lottery funding. It has partnered with Leeds University, Westminster University, the BBC, Anna Freud Centre, Oxfam, NTNU, Salamanca University to research outcomes of educational and health benefits of yoga for young people. We run several courses every year online and face to face to train professionals and parents in bringing yoga to teens. Collaborations include, Youth Connect South West, Bath Young Carers, Bath University, Depaul, Mentor UK, lululemon, London Youth, College of Medicine. In parliament, we hold annual meetings with MPs and Lords in the House of Commons and Lords in London, on the impact of yoga for young people and in 2022 we created the Rational for Yoga in Schools, outlining the financial benefits of yoga for young people. This can be found on our website. We are a slimline, active charity whose mission is to bring joy and health to young people through yoga. We believe in the agency and creativity of young people to find their own health and path. We have 2000 graduates worldwide who advocate for Teen Yoga in over 20 countries. We have delivered courses in Johannesburg, South Africa and Sierra Leone as part of our outreach.

Not physically.
Emotionally.

She loved teaching.
She cared deeply about her students.
But every day she was witnessing rising anxiety, panic attacks, emotional outbursts and overwhelmed young people struggling to cope.

She wanted to help them.
But she was running on empty herself.

Then her school partnered with Teen Yoga! ๐Ÿ’›

At first, she thought the sessions were mainly for students.

What she didnโ€™t expect was how much they would help her too.

The breathing practices became tools she used during stressful days.
The mindfulness techniques helped her regulate her own stress response.
The classroom atmosphere slowly became calmer.
Students became more emotionally aware.

And for the first time in months, she felt hope return. ๐ŸŒฑ

This is something people often overlook:
When we support young peopleโ€™s wellbeing, we also support the adults carrying the responsibility of caring for them every day.

Teachers are not just educators.
They are emotional anchors for countless children.

And they need support too.
๐Ÿ‘‡ Help us bring wellbeing programmes into more schools and communities.
๐Ÿ’› Together, we can support both young people and the adults guiding them.

NEW BLOG โฌ‡๏ธ by Charlotta Martinus. TeenYoga Founder. ๐Ÿ’œ

Are rising levels of youth disengagement, anxiety and social isolation inevitable?

History suggests otherwise.

The biggest social and public health improvements happened when we addressed root causes, not just symptoms. The same is true for young people today.

By the time a young person disengages from education or employment, the warning signs have often been present for years. If we want different outcomes, we need to invest earlier in emotional wellbeing, resilience and a sense of belonging.

The trends we see today are not inevitable. With the right support, they can become tomorrowโ€™s success stories.

One of the assumptions that concerns me most when discussing the growing number of young people who are not in education, employment or training is the subtle belief that the trend is somehow inevitable. When a problem becomes large enough, visible enough and persistent enough, there is a tendency ....

The yoga philosophy of Saucha, โ€œcleanliness and clarity,โ€ encourages us to care for our body, thoughts, surroundings, habits, and everything we take in through our 5-senses. When life feels balanced and organised, we create space for uplifting and inspiring energy to flow in, helping us feel calmer and more productive. Letting go of what no longer serves us, be it situations, things, or relationships, we open the door to more positive experiences and supportive connections. Here are a few golden nuggets from yoga and Ayurveda to help teens bring Saucha into practise:

๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ Yoga sequence (for clarity):
A few gentle rounds of Sun Salutations can help move stagnant energy and create space for fresh, vibrant energy to flow. Finish in Savasana and take a few quiet breaths to soak in the positive energy you created.

Mountain Pose > Upward Salute > Forward Fold > Half Lift > Plank > Knees-Chest-Chin/Chaturanga > Cobra/Upward Dog > Downward Dog > Step up to Half Lift > Forward Fold > Upward Salute > Mountain Pose (Prayer pose to heart)

๐Ÿ“ Mindful activity:
Invite students to sit quietly for a moment and notice how they feel. Then ask them to reflect on one small thing they could do to help them feel more clear or focused. This might look like tidying up their desk before they sit down to study or taking a short break from screens to get some fresh air. Encourage teens to try one small habit this week.

๐ŸŒฑ Ayurveda self-care tips:
Through the lens of Ayurveda, simple daily routines support clarity and balance. Starting the day with a glass of room-temperature water, getting fresh air or sunlight, and taking time to eat a nourishing meal can help ground the body and mind. Ayurveda also encourages gentle cleansing practices such as using a neti pot to rinse the sinuses, which may support clearer breathing and focus.

๐Ÿšจ Youth mental health isn't a future problemโ€”it's happening right now.

Schools are reporting rising emotional and behavioural challenges. Families are struggling to access support. Services are overwhelmed.

Yet we already know what works.

โœ… Early intervention
โœ… Emotional regulation
โœ… Resilience building
โœ… Self-direction skills

When young people are given practical tools to understand and manage their emotions, the benefits extend far beyond individual wellbeing. They improve outcomes in education, reduce pressure on support services, and create healthier communities.

The question isn't whether we can afford to invest in prevention.

It's whether we can afford not to.

Read our latest blog to discover why early intervention is one of the most effective investments we can make in the next generation. ๐Ÿ‘‡

One of the qualities I most admire in any society is the willingness to change course when new evidence emerges. It is surprisingly difficult for institutions, governments and even individuals to admit that an idea which once appeared progressive may require reconsideration. Yet throughout history,....

It read:
โ€œFor the first time in over a year, my daughter slept peacefully through the night.โ€

That single sentence stayed with us.

Because behind it was a family who had been carrying fear, exhaustion and helplessness for months.

Their daughter had been struggling with anxiety so severe that sleep became almost impossible.
Every evening felt like a battle.
Every morning began with exhaustion.

As parents, they had tried everything they could think of.

But through the practices introduced by Teen Yoga, something slowly shifted.

Not overnight.
Not magically.
But gently.

She learned how to breathe through panic.
How to recognise overwhelm in her body.
How to calm her nervous system before bedtime.
How to feel safe again.

And eventually, sleep returned. ๐ŸŒ™

People often ask:
โ€œCan yoga really make a difference?โ€

When you witness moments like this, the answer becomes very clear.

This work is not about flexibility.
Itโ€™s about creating access to calm in a world where so many young people feel overwhelmed.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give a child is simply the ability to rest.

๐Ÿ‘‡ Help us continue supporting young people and families facing emotional struggles.
