A brilliant day all round at the Chew Magna Duck Race… and the celebrations didn’t stop at the finish line 🦆✨

Last Saturday’s Afternoon Cream Tea in the Old Church Hall was just lovely — full of laughter, chatter, great music and dancing and a proper sense of community.

It was so good to see so many familiar faces come together and make the most of it. Proof, if ever it was needed, that Chew Magna knows how to do a Saturday well 💛

We had a wonderful time celebrating Easter with an Afternoon Tea at The Bear & Swan.

It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces come together to enjoy delicious treats, great company, and plenty of chat. Events like these are what Chew Chat is all about – bringing our 70+ community together to connect, laugh, and make new memories.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the team at The Bear & Swan for hosting us so beautifully. We’re already looking forward to the next one!

The fabulous Chew Chat day-trips continue! Yesterday off we went to the Holburne Museum in Bath - the home of Lady Danbury in Bridgerton. Sadly she wasn't home but that didn't spoil our fun. A 2-hour museum self-tour followed by a roast in a nearby pub ensured a very good time was had by all.

Next up - The Creamery at Castle Cary! If you love cheese and you're over 70 - we'll save you a seat on the minibus!

Many people know Chew Chat as a friendly group for the over 70s, but not everyone realises we also run a Photo Club. Our next meeting is on 5th March at 10.30am, and we meet regularly throughout the year.

The club is open to all levels of experience, from complete beginners to more seasoned photographers. You can use a traditional camera or simply your phone. Each meeting has a chosen theme. Members submit their photographs in advance and they are projected onto the screen, where Rick Ayrton leads an informal and constructive discussion.

Rick is well known locally for his remarkable deep sea wreck diving photography, and he brings both expertise and encouragement to the group. The atmosphere is relaxed and supportive, with no pressure - just an opportunity to enjoy photography, learn something new, and share your perspective with others.

If you might be interested, we would be delighted to welcome you. Just send me a message!

It’s never dull at Chew Chat!

Last weekend we swapped coffee mornings for the classroom with our Back to School lunch at Chew Magna Baptist Chapel. The day began with a rousing assembly, featuring singing, announcements and the rules of the day - most importantly, no running in the corridors (even if you still can!).

Our very own “Headmistress” took charge, delivering lessons in history, geography, biology, and elocution. House points were awarded for the right answers, and a rather impressive cup stood ready for the top-performing house.

The pupils were, for the most part, remarkably well behaved — though there were a few whispers at the back and some suspiciously long trips to the “cloakroom.” Everyone looked the part in ties, blazers, and shorts — proof that school spirit never fades, even if our knees have!

School lunch was a far cry from the lumpy mash of yesteryear — delicious chicken and leek pie followed by apple sponge and custard. Gold stars all round for the kitchen team!

It was a close-run competition, but Mendip House came out on top. House Captain Barbara and Prefect Carol graciously accepted the trophy - and handed out Walnut Whips (remember them?) to their triumphant team. A top-class effort all round!
