We are a local community group working in conjunction with organisations and individuals to improve and conserve our local environment

Join us on Thursday 15th October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.
Countryside Ranger Paul Shoreman will give a talk about this year's work and future developments at Spring Wood in Whalley.

We will also have a very short AGM before the talk to elect the committee. If you would like to help the environment in a constructive way you could join our committee.

Raffle and refreshments will round off the evening.

Cooler days and leaves begining to change colours also means REG volunteers are busy tidying up this summers plants.
There are still a few late flowers adding colour at Worthalls road but plenty to cut back too.
Saw an Angle moth and quite a number of ladybirds there this am

This week, leave one small thing as it is. A patch of leaves on the ground, a corner of a garden, a spider web, or a small mess that can stay a little longer. There is a quiet kind of respect in letting something be.
In a rainforest, leaf litter and fallen branches are full of life. They make shelter, food, and future soil. Many small creatures spend their whole lives in the pieces people might tidy away in another setting.

With so much news about the wildfires, lack of rain affecting crops and animal pasture, difficulties for wildlife we all have concerns. You may be interested in watching the Film of the National Emergency Briefing about the worlds Climate and Nature Crisis and how we can reduce the negative impact humans have created.
REG showed the film in May at the village hall. Since then many MP's have been contacted asking for their support for further screening and debate of the issues.

Balsam Bashing continues on different evenings again this week. If anyone would like to help get in touch. It is quite satisfying crunching the roots!

The Balsam Bashing session at Spring Wood on Saturday 4th July turned out to be a success. About 26 people took part. There were 2 DoE youngsters, a father and daughter, several couples, plus some Whalley Lions and Friends of Spring Wood. We were made very welcome and were fed and watered at midday, when (REG) finished. Some people carried on again until 2pm. Estimate is that 26 people took part, and about 45 hours were spent bashing and approx 18 bags of Roots and flowerhead were collected for destroying. Thank you to all who helped.
It was also National Wild Flower Meadow Day so a great day to see the variety of grasses and flowers in the meadow area of Spring Wood.

"We had a worthwhile and amazing visit to Monk Hall Farm and were warmly welcomed by Magnus and Helen. We saw their flocks of native and rare breed goats, sheep, hens, alpacas and herd of cattle. They are hugely into sustainability and their hard work reflects their success in animal husbandry and field and land management.
After a tour of the area a magical ending was the barn owl which flew close by with its prey."
Some of us bought some free range eggs - which turned out to be wonderful!

The litter pickers at the playground “ disappeared “ again. We have put out another adult sized and children’s sized one. Hoping they are used to keep playground clear of litter to make it pleasant for children playing and don’t get taken again.

Signs of Spring! REG did some tidying at Read St John’s school to prepare for gardening club. Lots of worms, a few ladybirds and bulbs flowering !
Worthalls road flower bed has lots if signs of spring making everyone feel brighter .

Sadly people still throw and dump rubbish. The photograph shows the amount of litter a few volunteers collected and cleared from around our villages over a few days in February. With more people helping we could make a bigger difference to our local area and the environment we all need to look after.
Can you help as a one off time or occasionally?
Perhaps as part of the national event of "The Great British Spring Clean" in March.
