RIVER WALL COLLAPSE - UPDATE.

The river wall collapsed yesterday, and took some of the footpath surface along with it. Somerset Council have been informed, and they are attending today to close the footpath, as it is unsafe.

The Mayor and other Town Council councillors put barriers in place yesterday evening, but members of the public have been ignoring this. Town Council officers have today put signs in place, to highlight the danger of moving the barriers and using the footpath.

Please respect the barriers in place, and do not use this footpath. Other routes can be via the Bartons footpaths, and also over Packhorse Bridge.

PLEASE DO NOT MOVE THE BARRIERS AND USE THE FOOTPATH!

URGENT CLOSURE OF FOOTPATH AT CROWN GREEN THROUGH TO BISHTON GREEN:

Bruton Town Council have received an update from Somerset Council.

The closure of the footpath from Crown Green leading through to Bishton Green is a necessary health and safety measure to protect members of the public from a potentially dangerous situation. Following discussions between Somerset Council and the relevant parties, arrangements have been made to fully seal off access to the pathway and contractors are expected on Monday 26th October to complete the closure works.

A formal Somerset Council Notice of Closure will be displayed on-site later this week.

The section of riverside wall remains unstable, and efforts are currently underway to secure temporary protective measures before the winter months. Somerset Council is seeking a specialist contractor to address the most vulnerable section of the wall to help reduce the risk of further deterioration.

We appreciate that the closure may cause inconvenience, particularly for regular users of the footpath. However, public safety must remain the overriding priority while the structural risks associated with the collapsing wall are assessed and managed.

Residents are asked to respect all closure notices and barriers, and not attempt to access the affected section of the path.

Multi-million investment to protect Bruton’s environment

Wessex Water is investing more than £7 million to upgrade Bruton’s water recycling centre, at the end of Gants Mill Lane over the next year.

From October, teams from YTL Construction UK will be working through a 15-month construction programme at the treatment plant off Gants Mill Lane, which treats all sewage from the town.
The improvements will see new treatment systems installed to help remove nutrients, such as phosphorus, from being released into the River Brue, which can potentially harm plant and animal life.

All of the construction activity will take place within the existing boundary of the water recycling centre, with a construction compound set up adjacent to the site.

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “This is a significant investment to ensure the quality of treated wastewater at Bruton continues to meet the highest standards. Ultimately this means improved river health.”

The narrow nature of Gants Mill Lane means there may be occasions where access either on to the lane, or out on to Cole Road, may be affected, with short delays while our construction traffic enters or leaves the site. ‘No entry’ signs will be erected at the Sunny Hill end of Gants Mill Lane.

“We’d like to thank local customers for their patience while we complete these important improvements. There will be no impact from the project on customers’ sewerage services, which can be used as normal.’’

The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

The order becomes effective on 30th September 2026 and will remain in force for eighteen months.

The works are expected to commence on 7th October 2026 and last for 6 hours (09:30 - 15:30) to enable Openreach to carry out poling works.

The contractor has indicated that access for Emergency Services through the site is permitted on this occasion.

The Town Council is aware of ongoing litter problems on an area of Network Rail land at Plox Bridge, West End, Bruton. Unfortunately, as the site is located behind a locked gate, the Council is unable to arrange litter-picking activities there. While the presence of litter is unsightly, it is not considered a rail safety issue and therefore is not currently a high priority for Network Rail. We would ask everyone using the area to help keep it clean by disposing of rubbish responsibly, using available bins or taking litter home with them. Small actions can make a big difference in keeping our community tidy and attractive for everyone.

Emergency Road Closure: – ttrnS-ttro616569-WW-Silver Street, Bruton

Please be aware that we have received a notification of a TTRN (emergency) road closure at Silver Street, Bruton which commenced on 23rd September 2026 - 24th September 2026 (00:00 - 23:59) for a total of 2 days.
This will enable Wessex Water to replace damaged and seized covers and access sewers to clear blockages.
The contractor has indicated that access for Emergency Services through the site is not permitted on this occasion.
