We're hoping for some really bad puns in the comments by the way.

🐝 Green Spaces Fund Case Study 2/10: Bury 🐝

The “Rewilding Fairfield Hospital” project, run by NorthCare Charity, received a grant of £40,000 in Round Four of the Green Spaces Fund to enhance the grounds of Fairfield General Hospital in Bury.

The charity knew that the hospital site, which sits in one of the most deprived wards of Bury, had so much natural beauty and potential, but not enough resource, funding, or expertise to unlock it.

Thanks to the Green Spaces Fund, they have created three distinct gardens, each with its own purpose:

🐸 Bog Garden: Supports wildlife and enhances biodiversity.
🕊️ Peace Garden: Designed to promote well-being for staff and patients.
🐞 Education Garden: Provides a learning space for local nurseries and schools.

In total, they’ve enhanced 9,174m² of green space and planted over 13,000 bulbs and 190 trees around the site.

The gardens are now also a valuable tool for social prescribing, connecting people with preventative health support and helping reduce pressure on NHS services.

“We’re thrilled that the project has raised awareness about the importance of green spaces for health and wellbeing” - Emma, NorthCare Charity.

The Green Spaces Fund is currently open for applications. Visit https://gmet.org.uk/green-spaces-fund for more.

Are you in the know about Right to Grow? 🤔🪴

Last week, we attended the fifth Green and Blue Spaces Action Network event in Bury, making it the first GBSAN event to take place outside of central Manchester.

The session explored how the national Right to Grow movement has been embraced in Bury.

Right to Grow is Incredible Edible's proposed legislation to change the law so that more people have the right to grow food on public land, and it was really encouraging to hear from local groups and supporters who are already demonstrating the power community growing can have.

Make sure you're at the next GBSAN event if you're invested in GM's greener future 🌿

🐝 Green Spaces Fund Case Study 1/10: Bolton 🐝

The “Ivy Road Community Project” was launched by Harpers Lane Community Garden: a dedicated group of volunteers who are committed to greening up patches of Bolton.

The project received £32,800 in Round Four of the Green Spaces Fund.

They wanted to transform plain grass verges on either side of the street into a thriving green hub, as the diverse local community are largely without access to gardens or growing space.

They have planted 15 fruit trees on site, several fruit bushes, hundreds of bulbs and a wildflower patch. This has resulted in a notable increase of wildlife, particularly insect wildlife, thanks to this diverse mix of pollinator-friendly plants.

They’ve also added many edible plants, providing free food for anybody who needs it. Any unused produce is donated to the local food bank.

They have used the space to hold several successful community events such as family wildlife days, foraging workshops, walks and meditation sessions.

“The site has now become a place for people to use and enjoy rather than the scrubby land they saw previously.” - Heather, Harpers Lane Community Garden.

The Green Spaces Fund is currently open for applications. Visit https://gmet.org.uk/green-spaces-fund for more.

The Manchester Flower Festival was bloom-tastic, according our Programme Manager, Grace 🌸

Now in it's ninth year, the festival transforms the city centre into a colourful celebration of flowers, green spaces, and urban nature.

It's yet another way that Greater Manchester is becoming greener, and we love to see it!
