A concert centred around Britten’s cycle, A Charm of Lullabies. In it, Britten sets five diverse texts unified by the themes of night and sleep, including poems by Burns and Blake.

Hear the cycle at Bechstein Hall on Thursday 10th September at 6pm. Marta Fontanals-Simmons (mezzo-soprano) is joined by pianist Libby Burgess and viola player Jane Atkins in a rush-hour recital which includes Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata and works by Brahms and Grace Williams.

Meeting W. H. Auden in the summer of 1935 was a pivotal moment in the life of Benjamin Britten, sparking a highly productive partnership and significant friendship. On This Island was the 23-year-old composer’s first published group of songs with piano.
