🟠An Amber Heat Alert for our region will come into force this afternoon (Friday, 22 May) from 2pm and it is expected to last until 5pm Wednesday, 27 May. We know weather like this on a Bank Holiday is very rare – it’s also very welcome - and we’d like you to be able to enjoy it as safely as possible!

💬Severe weather conditions, like heat, can, and often do, have an impact on our services and lead to a rise in attendances in ED which is why we share guidance with our community.

🌡With temperatures of over 25 degrees Celsius (ºC) forecast there are ways in which you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe over the next few days:

🏠keeping your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun
😎if you do go outside, cover up with suitable clothing, such as an appropriate hat and sunglasses, and seek shade and apply sunscreen regularly
☀️keeping out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm
🏃‍♂️if you are going to do a physical activity (for example, exercising or walking the dog), plan to do these during times of the day when it is cooler, such as the morning or evening
❤️knowing the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else has them
🫗 stay hydrated

Yesterday I joined the After School
Club at Heage Primary School to carry out a cpr/defib session. I had to admit I did not hold much hope of the children engaging especially at 3.30 on a Friday afternoon, however it was quite the opposite!! What a fabulous bunch of kids! They were totally engaged in the session, constantly asking for questions and getting vital hands on experience. They even carried on after the session had finished by continuing to practice CPR on their teatime cobs 😂.

This morning I was delighted to receive this email from an ambulance crew complimenting Jordan, one of our incredible responders.

We would like to formally recognise Jordan Barraclough (80157) for his outstanding support and professionalism. Jordan attended and was first on scene to a challenging incident involving a patient who presented with episodes of GCS and no available medical history. Despite the complexity of the situation, he remained calm, prepared, and highly effective throughout.

He delivered a clear and concise handover on our arrival despite the limited information available and provided invaluable assistance to the crew on scene. Jordan showed great initiative, was confident in locating and using equipment, and was not afraid to get fully involved in patient care.

Beyond his clinical contribution, Jordan is genuinely a kind and supportive individual who made a significant difference during a difficult job. His presence and input were greatly appreciated, and it is fair to say the situation who have been much harder to manage without him.

A true credit to the team

Lucy & Rob
